Matthew Robert Smith (born October 28, 1982 in Northampton , England ) is a British actor .
Career
After starring in several theater productions, he had his first television role in 2006 in the BBC -Adaptionen of Philip Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North alongside Billie Piper . He played his first leading role in 2007 as Danny on the BBC series Party Animals . In late 2009, he was cast as the eleventh doctorate in the cult British science fiction series Doctor Who . He took up the role at the end of the episode The End of Time with the regeneration from the tenth to the eleventh doctor and filled it from the fifth season up to and including the seventh season (from 2010-2013) of the series. This was very surprising because Smith was a relatively unknown actor. Fan speculation for the successor to David Tennant centered on the names David Morrissey and Paterson Joseph as well as James Nesbitt . Smith was the youngest actor to date to play the Doctorate - probably one of Britain's most sought-after roles. From 2016 to 2017 Smith was when Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in Peter Morgan's Netflix - history series The Crown to be seen. 2018 he was in the movie Charlie Says by Mary Harron as the cult leader Charles Manson to see.
He is in a relationship with actress Lily James .
