occupation

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (original title Pride and Prejudice and Zombies ) is an American - British horror film with romantic elements by Burr Steers . The film is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith , a parody of the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen . The film premiered on January 21, 2016 and was released in US cinemas on February 5, 2016 and in German cinemas on June 9, 2016.

Literary template

The film is an adaptation of a book of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith , which was published in 2009 and became a bestseller. Even before the film was adapted, a comic version of the book was created, in which Tony Lee adapted the novel and Cliff Richards translated the story into black and white drawings. There was also a non-Grahame-Smith written prequel novel entitled Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - Rise of the Living Dead . The book Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter , also written by Grahame-Smith, was filmed in 2012 under the title Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter .

action

In England the 19th century Colonel Darcy visited the estate to investigate the rumors of a rich family, that there were zombies could give. Small blowflies , which he carries in a bottle, help him . If he lets them fly and they settle on a person, it must be an undead; this is consequently eliminated by Darcy for good. After his work is done, he leaves because he is convinced that no one else has contracted the zombie disease. The zombie attacks in the house continue, however, because Darcy seems to have been wrong with his assessment. After this prelude, the story of the Benett family in a world threatened by the zombie plague is told. The daughters of the house are prepared for this, however, because their father sent them to the Far East to learn martial arts there. While the family tries to seal themselves off, the mother worries about how to get the girls under the hood despite the constant zombie attacks.

Reviews

David Steinitz of the Süddeutsche Zeitung says: The mash-up work of art 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' not only wants to satisfy bloodthirsty horror fans, but also romantics. […] And because after many years with little zombie the undead boom prevailed again, for example in hit series like ' The Walking Dead ', Grahame-Smith pureed 'Pride and Prejudice' in 2009 in the zombie meat grinder. Does it really need that, asked the Jane Austen purists even then, and they are probably asking themselves again on the occasion of the filming. The answer is clearly: yes.

Even if the film sometimes neglects to relate to heartbreak, according to Tim Slagman from SPIEGEL ONLINE , the narrative elements contained therein, which are based on confrontation, flow surprisingly harmoniously into one another. Slagman says: Not least of all, this detail shows that the material is less about an appropriation of Austen's novel by the thinking of current globalized pop culture , but rather about the mutual interpenetration of literary and cinematic genres. Beautiful women in historical costumes doing martial arts contortions : That belongs back to the cinema, it promises the comedy of the unexpected and the fascination of the kinetic action at the same time. Slagman is particularly astonished by the sovereignty with which Steers transforms the desired clash of two fictional worlds into an astonishingly cohesive one.

Gross profit

The worldwide revenue of the film is currently 16.4 million US dollars (as of February 28, 2016).
