Sam Riley
Samuel "Sam" Peter W. Riley (born January 8, 1980 in Leeds , England ) is a British actor .
Life
Sam Riley was born in 1980 in Leeds , the son of a textile agent and a kindergarten teacher . He attended private boarding school in Uppingham and was the front man of the Leedser rock band 10,000 Things and the band Horned Owls , with whom he toured England. Riley spent two weeks with the National Youth Theater one summer , after which he turned to an acting career. After he was rejected by the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art as too young and inexperienced and his music band broke up, Riley worked in pubs and department stores.
Riley's breakthrough as an actor came with the lead role as Ian Curtis , front man for Joy Division in Control . His performance in the film, in which he performed the vocal parts himself, has received several awards, including the Young Actor Award at the British Independent Film Awards , the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the London Critics' Circle Film Awards . He also starred in the role of Mark E. Smith in the previously released film 24 Hour Party People about the band Joy Division . However, many of his scenes were not included in the final theatrical version. In 2008 Riley starred in the fantasy film Franklyn - The Truth Wears Many Masks one of the main roles. In 2010, he played the lead role of Pinkie in the film adaptation of the Graham Greene novel Brighton Rock (directed by Rowan Joffe ). In 2012 he starred in Neil Jordan's thriller Byzantium opposite Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan . In the same year he played the young author Sal Paradise in On the Road , who goes on a road trip through America with his friend. Supporting actors included Garrett Hedlund and Kirsten Dunst . In 2014 he played the main role of Greider in the Austrian production Das sinstere Tal .
He has been married to the German-Romanian actress Alexandra Maria Lara since August 2009 , whom he met while filming Control . The couple live in Berlin and have a son who was born in January 2014.
