occupation

Suite française - Melody of love (Original title: Suite française) is a war drama by director Saul Dibb . The British-French-Canadian co-production takes place in France at the time of World War II and is based on the unfinished novel of the same name by Irène Némirovsky .

action

During the occupation of France by the Germans in the early summer of 1940, many people from Paris fled to the countryside. When a regiment is stationed in Lucile Angellier's village, the German officer Bruno von Falk is quartered in the house of Lucile and her family.

The unhappily married Lucile's husband is a prisoner of war, and Lucile has to get along with the occupiers on one side and the dominant mother-in-law on the other while she waits for a message from her husband. Benoît Labarie, who killed a German soldier, hides them from the occupiers. Because of their passion for playing the piano, Lucile and Bruno von Falk get closer; he used to be a composer.

background

Novel

Originally planned as a five-part series of novels by the author Irène Némirovsky , only two volumes of Suite française (“Sturm im Juni” and “Dolce”) could be completed. Of the remaining three volumes, only sketches of the further course of action are available, since the author was arrested in July 1942 and deported to Auschwitz , where she died of typhus on August 17, 1942.

production

Universal Studios acquired the film rights for the material in 2006 and entrusted screenwriter Ronald Harwood with the implementation of the script. However, when TF1 Droits Audiovisuels acquired the rights in 2007 , Saul Dibb and Matt Charman wrote the script.

Production began in February 2013 and filming in June of the same year. As production companies were Alliance Films , Qwerty Films , Scope Pictures and TF1 Films Production involved. The budget was estimated at 15 million euros.

The filming locations were the municipality of Marville in the Meuse department and the Lorrainen municipality of Lorrainen in France and the province of Hainaut and Virton in Belgium, both of which are part of Wallonia .

publication

On November 5, 2014, a screening took place in front of representatives of the film industry at the American Film Market in Santa Monica, California. The film launch in most European cinemas was between March and May 2015. In Germany, the film was released on January 14, 2016.
