Alliance Films (also known as Alliance Communications, Alliance Atlantis Releasing LTD or CIC Canada and in Quebec as Alliance VivaFilm) was a large Canadian film production studio headquartered in Montreal , Québec . The company distributed films worldwide and had offices in the UK and Spain .
history
The company was founded in 1984 by Stephen Roth, Denis Héroux , John Kemeny, Robert Lantos, Andras Hamori and Susan Cavan as Alliance Entertainment. In 1990 a film distribution studio, Vivafilm, was purchased in the French-speaking province of Quebec. In 1998 the two companies merged and Alliance Atlantis Communications was founded. Due to the bankruptcy of Alliance Atlantis, the company was broken up and parts of it were sold. In 2007 Alliance Films was re-established. The parts of the company bought u. a. Société générale de financement du Québec and Goldman Sachs Capital , both of which have large stakes.
On June 24, 2011, Alliance Films acquired Maple Pictures from Lions Gate Entertainment for $ 38.5 million.
On January 3, 2012, Goldmann Sachs Capital announced its interest in selling its shares. On May 28, 2012, the Canadian company Entertainment One expressed interest in the shares of Goldmann Sachs Capital.
On January 9, 2013, Entertainment One (eOne) acquired Alliance Films and all of its subsidiaries for $ 225 million.
