Final Destination 3 is an American teen horror film from the year 2006 . He continues the series of films in 2000 with Final Destination began with 2003 Final Destination 2 was continued. The film premiered on February 10, 2006 in the USA and opened in German cinemas on April 13, 2006 , where it was seen by more than 600,000 viewers.

The basic theme of the final destination series is outwitting fate. Visions of individual affected persons enable them to foresee the future. In this way, the death of different people is always prevented at first, but since the death was predetermined, death takes all of the victims one after the other.

action

The young high school graduate Wendy Christensen has a vision in an amusement park that the roller coaster she is about to ride with her friends will derail due to a chain of unfortunate circumstances, killing all passengers. As a result, she and some of her schoolmates do not take the train, which actually crashes shortly afterwards. Wendy's boyfriend and her best friend Carrie are among the victims.

When the survivors die a little later - sometimes under cruel circumstances - and Kevin points out that death wants to take them, Wendy does not want to believe this at first. But then Wendy discovers that the photos she took before the trip give an indication of the circumstances of the survivors' death. Together with Carrie's friend Kevin Fischer, she tries to outsmart death. This is made more difficult by the fact that the two do not know the names of two survivors.

Wendy and Kevin find out that the eternally black-clad couple Erin and Ian, who work in a hardware store, also died on the roller coaster. Erin dies in the hardware store, which Ian blames Wendy for. Wendy finally finds out that her sister Julie was also on the roller coaster, which she had previously kept quiet. At a festival, Julie is almost strangled by the bridle of a continuous horse, but Kevin rescues her at the last second before she slides into a sharp-edged rake. It turns out that not only Julie was on the roller coaster, but also her friend Perry. Seconds later this is impaled by the still not calmed horse rearing up from a flinging flagpole. The three temporary survivors then have to watch as the megalomaniac Ian, who may be out to harm Wendy, is crushed by a falling crane stand. Kevin is saved from death and thus - so the protagonists believe  - the plan of death is foiled.

Five months later: Wendy has started a new life as a student in New York when she suddenly realizes in a subway car that death is present. Suddenly she recognizes a number of signs such as flickering light, air breezes, signs with the words "Death" and the song that warned her of her death before the festival. The train number 081, which looks like 180 in a mirror at the subway station (an allusion to flight 180 from Final Destination 1 , among other things ), and the announcement from the train driver reinforce her suspicions. She also discovers advertising posters referring to the places or names where the other “survivors” died. When she wants to get off at the next station, she is prevented by the hug of her sister, who is just entering the subway. Wendy tells her about her fear, but Julie reassures her by pointing out that as long as she and Kevin are not dead, nothing will happen to Wendy either. By chance she meets Kevin a short time later in exactly this subway car. A foreboding creeps up on her and she thinks about what her sister said to her: After her and Kevin, it's Wendy's turn.

Wendy relives another vision in which she sees the train rushing onto the wrong track. Her sister and Kevin die cruelly as a result of the derailment , she is thrown from the wreck onto the tracks and sees an oncoming train approaching. Shortly afterwards, the film jumps back to the scene in which Wendy and Julie meet Kevin - the three of them have to face the inevitable. It is not clear whether the protagonists will die, but the unsuccessful efforts to apply the emergency brake are faded into the credits and the subsequent noises leave little doubt.

Circumstances of death

The circumstances of death are more bizarre than in the previous one. The protagonists die by burning, by dismembering the head, by crushing the head, by piercing the head, by piercing the body and by shattering the body.

  • Ashley and Ashlyn die in the tanning salon because the temperature regulator over-voltage due to a short circuit (triggered by condensation from Ashley's Slushy) and heats the solariums so much that they catch fire and burn the two girls in it. They were unable to escape from the solariums because part of a previously damaged wooden shelf blocked the covers.
  • Frankie's head is torn apart by the air cooler of the engine of the car behind him as he stands in the drive-through of a diner and a truck speeds into the line of cars.
  • Lewis dies when the swords of the team crest cut the ropes of the fitness equipment he is using in the gym and a little later the weights crush his head.
  • In the hardware store, Erin dies from a nail gun that shoots many nails through her head.
  • Perry, the friend of Wendy's sister Julie, is pierced by an iron bar at the festival, which has been dragged along by the wild horse and thrown through the air.
  • Ian is crushed by the unlocked arm of a lift.
  • Julie, Kevin and Wendy die five months later when a train derails. However, it is not known whether the course of the accident corresponds to Wendy's vision, as the film ends while the three attempt to rescue themselves. Only the audible noises of the derailing train probably confirm this.

Connections to the other parts

As is so often the case in the Final Destination films, there are some “ running gag ” -like connections to the previous parts:

  • The entire opening credits are kind of a preview of the accidents that will happen in the film.
  • The truck that ensures that Frankie blesses the temporal can be seen in the second part in the highway crash scene ("drink responsibly"). The beer brand "Hice Pale Ale", which the truck advertises, also appears in the other parts.
  • The song played at Ashley's and Ashley's funerals is the same one that was heard at the memorial service for the airplane victims in Part 1.
  • In the fitness center, the song Killing Time was on the radio before the accident happened. Before Frankie's death in the drive-in and at the end of the subway, the song Turn Around comes before the accident happens. Something similar happens in the second part, where Highway to Hell is on the radio before the highway crash .
  • In the scene in the tool store, the shelf with the number 081 plays a key role. The line number of the subway where the survivors meet at the end is also 081 ... or - in the mirror - 180 (flight number in the first part). This number appears in all five Final Destination parts if a disaster occurs shortly afterwards.
  • The Lettermen's Turn Around song appears quite often in the film . A rotation of 180 ° is also called a "turn around".
  • Carrie Dreyer's (Wendy's friend who dies on the roller coaster) cousin Blake is a victim of Flight 180 from the first part.

criticism

Richard Roeper ( Chicago Sun-Times ) criticizes the characters in the film as the stupidest in film history.

Sequels

On September 3, 2009, the third sequel, Final Destination 4 , was released in German cinemas. Directed again was David R. Ellis , who was also responsible for the second part. As in the third part, Glen Morgan wrote the script again with Ellis. This part was - as it should actually have already happened in Part 3 - produced in 3D . Final Destination 5 was released in German cinemas on August 25, 2011.

Trivia

  • The film entered the US box office at number 2 on its opening weekend and grossed 19 million US dollars, hardly less than the budget of the film, which was estimated at 25 million US dollars. This makes the Final Destination series one of the most financially successful film series. Parts 4 and 5 have already been announced for the book series accompanying the films, which will be published at the same time.
  • The survivors of the second part (Kimberly and Burke) were supposed to have a cameo in this film and died in the subway train accident at the end of this film. But since actors AJ Cook and Michael Landes were busy with other projects, this idea was dropped.
  • The film originally ended with the disaster at the fair. After a test audience gave this ending miserable marks, a “further” ending was added to the film with the subway accident.
  • The working titles of the film were Cheating Death: Final Destination 3 and Final Destination 3-D .
  • Like the other two parts, Final Destination 3 was shot in the vicinity of the Canadian city of Vancouver .
  • The roller coaster from the film is called Corkscrew and is located in the Playland theme park in Vancouver, Canada.
  • In the tanning salon, Ashley and Ashlyn appropriately listen to the Ohio Players song Love Rollercoaster .
