Denis Héroux

Denis Héroux OC (born July 15, 1940 in Montreal , Quebec ; † December 10, 2015 there ) was a Canadian film producer and director .

Life

Denis Héroux grew up in Montreal. His original career aspiration was a teacher, but in 1962 he made a documentary with Denys Arcand and Stéphane Venne, called Seul ou avec d'autres, about student life at the University of Montreal , where he studied history to become a teacher. In the same year he graduated and worked as a teacher for six years. During this time he wrote two non-fiction books and directed several films.

Shortly thereafter, he made a name for himself as an independent filmmaker , in particular with the two erotic films Valérie and Wild on Young Buds , which are on the verge of porn .

His breakthrough as a filmmaker came with films like Rebels (1972) and Totally Crazy (1975). As a sought-after filmmaker, he also began to produce foreign films, including The Girl at the End of the Street by Nicolas Gessner and Blood Relatives (1978) by Claude Chabrol . In 1981 he was a member of the jury of the Berlin International Film Festival . In 1982 he produced Atlantic City, USA for Louis Malle, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture at the 1982 Academy Awards . But the prize was won by David Puttnam for The Hour of the Winner . In 1984 he founded the film production studio Alliance Films together with Stephen Roth, John Kemeny, Robert Lantos, Andras Hamori and Susan Cavan .

In 1990 he was nominated for a Gemini Award for the miniseries La révolution française . He also won a Genie Award for The Bay Boy in 1985 . He was also nominated in 1982 for Les Plouffe and 1983 for In the Beginning Was Fire .

Héroux was also a film critic and was a member of the Federal Cultural Policy Review Committee . He received the Order of Canada in 1984 .

Héroux died on December 10, 2015 at the age of 75.

Private life

His younger brother Claude Héroux is also a film and television producer.
