Alone for Two (Original title: À nous deux ) is a French drama directed by Claude Lelouch with Catherine Deneuve and Jacques Dutronc from 1979.

action

The musically gifted Simon celebrated his eighth birthday in 1951 with his family and friends. His father is part of a criminal gang and is shot dead one day when police ambush him and his men. Simon grew up in Paris with Tonton, a friend of his father's. The adult Simon ends up in prison for theft, where he is allowed to play the piano and sing for all inmates at Christmas. One day, Simon manages to escape, whereupon the aged Tonton tries to help him go into hiding. After another coup, Simon ends up hidden in a cattle truck full of sheep in Provence , where he finds shelter in an old couple's hut. The former pharmacist Françoise, who actually wanted to become a cellist , also sought refuge from the police with them. She once got into the crooks business by seducing men whose wives wanted to file for divorce and needed proof of their husbands' infidelity. Then she specialized in blackmailing politicians who could not afford scandals.

At first, Françoise is very reserved towards Simon. She was once raped in a robbery on her father's pharmacy and has not trusted the men since. When the police find the hut via Tonton, Françoise and Simon escape on a motorcycle. With a stolen car they finally reach the French Riviera, from where they take a boat out to sea and shortly afterwards change to a motorboat, leaving the actual owners behind in the smaller boat. After that, they encounter a yacht and pretend to have an engine failure. On board the yacht, Simon and Françoise each draw a pistol and steal all kinds of cash and jewelry. Then they continue with the motorboat. Again on the mainland, they are referred to on the radio as " Bonnie and Clyde of the Côte d'Azur ". However, they decide to go their separate ways from now on.

Françoise is arrested while trying to flee abroad by plane. When she is to be brought to Paris by train accompanied by two policemen, she is released during a stop in Lyon by one of the policemen, whose wife is in Simon's hands. After the exchange between the two women, the police believe that Simon and Françoise are driving a car. However, you take the train to Le Havre . From there they take a freighter to Canada , where they are loaded onto a truck in a cargo box in the port. Shortly before the border with the United States , they continue on foot despite meters of snow. After crossing the border, they want to eat something in a fast-food restaurant. When they are provoked there by a group of thugs, Simon takes out his gun and asks for the keys to their car. He and Françoise then go to a motel. While they are showering together, several police cars arrive in front of the motel. The police chief uses a megaphone to ask them to leave their room with raised hands within five minutes. Françoise now calls the reception and tells the police chief that she and Simon have several hostages under their control. In the end, they are given two getaway cars. Françoise pretends to be a hostage and gets into the first car with Simon, who holds his pistol to her head, and they drive off together. Before the police realize that they have been duped, Simon and Françoise have already disappeared. The next day they hitchhike in a truck towards New York . There, they hope, they will one day lead a civil life. During the trip, Françoise dreams that they play music together in a sophisticated hotel: Simon on the piano and she herself on the cello.
