action

It seems like a night like any other in Los Angeles when Jarrod, Elaine and their friends are suddenly awakened by a strange blue light and tremors like an earthquake.

Very soon the friends find out that the light phenomena can be traced back to an extraterrestrial force that is attacking not only LA but probably the whole world. The light has a tremendous attraction and people cannot turn away once they have looked into it. Those who are affected involuntarily move towards the light source and thus towards the alien spaceships. More and more people are attracted by the blue glow and sucked into the spaceships. The friends decide to hide in their apartment and wait for help. Ultimately, however, this turns out to be pointless, as more and more alien creatures are spreading around the city and hunting people.

Two of the friends die while trying to flee the skyscraper through the underground car park with cars. They meet other people who are killed by the aliens and finally flee a man to his apartment. They want to continue to hide there. Since Jarrod initially had brief contact with the light, but was released in time, his body continues to develop internally in the meantime. The contamination with the light can lead to rage, which releases an enormous force. This arouses the mistrust of the other survivors, especially that of his girlfriend Elaine.

Any military countermeasures appear to be ineffective. Even the use of nuclear weapons does not bring the alien invaders to their knees, as the alien war machine has a kind of regeneration ability that can repair any damage over time.

After only Jarrod and Elaine have survived to the last, they too end up in one of the spaceships hovering over the city. This shows what exactly the aliens are planning to do with humans: They extract their brains in order to then implant them in two-legged beings. Elaine has to watch Jarrod have his brain removed. Because of her pregnancy, she is obviously intended for other plans, which is why she is taken to another area of the spaceship. You can see how Jarrod's brain is implanted in one of the creatures in an adjoining room, but unlike others he remains conscious and can independently control the new body, which is probably due to the contact with the blue light at the beginning of the film. In addition, his brain first glows blue like the others, but later red. In the creature in which his brain and probably his consciousness were implanted, his many eyes do not glow blue, as in the other creatures, but orange. Alerted by Elaine's screams, he penetrates her and frees her from the threatening treatment. In the final scene you can see both of them surrounded by other aliens. The film ends here very abruptly, but in the credits some stills indicate that Jarrod can free Elaine and with her, carrying her, escapes from the spaceship.

Reviews

“The brothers Colin and Greg Strause have also appeared as directors, but work primarily as specialists for special effects, which they contributed to Avatar - Aufbruch nach Pandora and 2012 , among other things . You can see that clearly in the skyline, in the great effects, the worth seeing long shots of destruction and kidnapping. But because all of this goes only minimally beyond the thunderstorm, because the viewer can never develop interest in the characters and their fate, because after all the extraterrestrials remain pleasantly puzzling, but at the same time remain completely interchangeable and without attributes, none of this has anything to do with us. You watch a lifeless machinery of destruction as it lays a world in ruins that remains indifferent to us. Tumber cannot be science fiction. "
