Marie Curie - Elements of Life (original title Radioactive ) is a romantic film drama by Marjane Satrapi , which celebrated its world premiere in September 2019 as part of the Toronto International Film Festival and was released in German cinemas on July 16, 2020. It is a biography of the Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie and her husband Pierre Curie .

production

It was directed by the Iranian-French comic artist Marjane Satrapi . The film is based on the graphic novel Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout by Lauren Redniss , which was adapted for the film by Jack Thorne . The story tells of Marie Curie , her work and her meeting with her future colleague and husband Pierre Curie . Before that, Satrapi had only filmed her own graphic novels, such as Persepolis and Chicken with Plums . According to her own statements, the director liked how Thorne Curie's research had linked it to the [more modern] times.

Regarding the use of non-Marie Curie's lifetime footage in general and the scene in which you see the little boy walking through the bombed streets of Hiroshima in particular, Satrapi said: "This suggested to the viewer that Madame Curie was in favor of the atomic bomb and that was responsible for Hiroshima. But that was not the case - she was a decent woman who discovered the radioactive element, less decent people later used this discovery to kill other people. " When Pierre Curie says of his discovery "It can be dangerous in the hands of criminals", it suggests that he foresaw the abuse and is therefore partly responsible, but he was a scientist who believed in human progress. It was extremely important to the director where exactly you insert scenes from modern times, as the context changes their meaning.

Rosamund Pike took on the role of Marie Curie, Sam Riley plays Pierre Curie and Anya Taylor-Joy her daughter, who was later awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry under the name Irène Joliot-Curie herself.

The shooting took place in the Hungarian capital Budapest . Anthony Dod Mantle acted as cameraman .

The score was composed by Evgueni and Sacha Galperine . The soundtrack, which comprises a total of 12 pieces of music, was released as a CD by Milan Records on March 13, 2020. In the film, Satrapi did not limit herself musically to Marie Curie's epoch in order to underline something through the choice of music, but also wanted to use electronic music because she did not want to talk about electrons when this is underlaid with classical music, just as one does not want to talk about Madame Curie can talk and ignore the atom bomb, says the director.

The film was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 14, 2019 and celebrated its world premiere here. At the end of September and beginning of October 2019 it was shown at the Zurich Film Festival and celebrated its premiere here in German-speaking countries. In November 2019 it will be presented at the Polish film festival Camerimage . It should be in German cinemas on April 9, 2020, but the start has been postponed to July 16, 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Use in class

The online portal kinofenster.de recommends the film from the 9th grade for the subjects German , English, ethics / religion, art, history, biology, physics and chemistry and offers material for the film for the lessons. There Hanna Schneider writes that in the subjects of physics and chemistry, for example, the fundamentals of research on radioactivity could be examined: “The discussion of the dangers and benefits of radioactive applications as well as the initial blind enthusiasm with which the new discoveries were made But it also raises ethical and moral questions: To what extent are scientists responsible for what happens to their research results? ”This could also tie in with current discourses on, for example, genetic engineering or artificial intelligence. In the social and sociological subjects, the historical role of women in research, which is characterized by obstacles and resistance, could be discussed, whereby a comparison with the current situation could also be offered here. In art lessons, an analysis of the aesthetic means of film can be carried out, particularly with regard to the representation of radioactivity.
