Marjane Satrapi

Marjane Satrapi ( Persian مرجان ساتراپی[ mærˈʤɔːn sɔːtrɔːˈpiː ]; * November 22, 1969 in Rascht , Iran ) is an Iranian- French comic artist , illustrator of children's books and filmmaker.

Life

Satrapi grew up in a left middle class family in Tehran . In 1984 her parents sent her to Vienna so that she could escape the effects of the Islamic Revolution and the First Gulf War . Four years later she returned to Tehran and studied visual communication at the art faculty . In 1994 she emigrated to France, where she initially lived in Strasbourg .

She became known worldwide through her comic autobiography Persepolis . In it she draws and describes her childhood in Iran and her youth in Vienna and Tehran in simple, black and white individual images. She closely connects her life story with Iranian history and depicts the effects of the politics of the Revolutionary Guard and the government on the everyday life of Iranian youth. She filmed the story in 2007 together with Vincent Paronnaud as an animated film , for the well-known speakers such as Catherine Deneuve , Gena Rowlands or Danielle Darrieux could be won. For the German version, the main character is spoken by the German-Iranian actress Jasmin Tabatabai . The film, which bears the name of the comic was in competition at the 2007 60th Cannes Film Festival represented and received together with Carlos Reygadas Silent Light the Jury Prize . A few months later, Persepolis was selected as the official French contribution for the nomination for the best foreign language film at the 2008 Academy Awards and nominated for the European Film Award.

Persepolis was initially not shown in Iran. Satrapi had also longbeen insultedas an enemy of the state, “whore of the West” and an employee of the CIA and Mossad . After being nominated for an Oscar, the government couldn't afford to withhold an Iranian film that had received so much international recognition from the Iranians - it would have been the first Iranian film to win an Oscar. The Tehran regime has therefore scheduled seven screenings with 75 viewers each and cut 25 minutes out of the film because they allegedly contained sexual scenes.

In 2008 Satrapi was appointed to the competition jury at the 61st Cannes Film Festival . Three years later she filmed another comic strip with Vincent Paronnaud, Poulet aux prunes . The film received an invitation to compete at the 68th Venice International Film Festival in 2011 . It was released in German cinemas at the beginning of 2012 under the title Chicken with Plums .

While Persepolis is a very political film, Satrapi said of Chicken with Plums in an interview: “You could say this film is not political. But what better way to refute prejudices about a country than a story that tells: 'On November 22nd, 1958, a man dies of love for a woman.' […] It's good that there are demos. I do not do this anymore. I have seen too often how divided people can be when they are at the service of a cause. I am an artist and do what I understand something about. "

Marjane Satrapi lives in Paris. Since 2006 she has had both Iranian and French citizenship .
