Stellet Licht (also Stilles Licht or Luz silenciosa, English title Silent Light, festival title Lumière silencieuse ) is a feature film by Carlos Reygadas . The film was nominated for competition at the 60th Cannes International Film Festival .

action

Stellet Licht tells the tragic-poetic love story of a Plautdiet Mennonite in northern Mexico. Johan, who is married to Esther, is a farmer, has 6 children and lives in a religious colony where Plautdietsch is spoken. By having a relationship with another woman (Marianne) and loving two women at the same time, he commits an unforgivable sin and opposes his church and God. Violent conscience torments drive Johan to the edge of his mental resilience. He speaks openly with both women about his feelings, no matter how hurtful it is for them. Despite everything, Johan believes that paradise can also exist on earth.

background

The Mexican director Carlos Reygadas occupied Silent Light with amateur actors, as before in his films Japón and Battle In Heaven . The film was shot in the vicinity of the northern Mexican Mennonite metropolis Cuauhtémoc .

The original language of the film is Plautdietsch , a West Prussian variety of Low German . The film was shown at the Cannes premiere in 2007 with subtitles in English and French. Stellet Licht is the first international movie in Plautdietsch language.

With their countries of origin, the main characters reflect part of the Russian-Mennonite migration history: Miriam Toews lives in Canada , where a large part of the Mennonites from what was then southern Russia (now Ukraine) emigrated to at the end of the 19th century . Some of these Russian mennonites established new colonies in Mexico in the 1920s and later , where Cornelio Wall is now at home. The part of the Russian mennonites who remained in the Soviet Union until the Second World War has meanwhile also migrated further, namely as part of the repatriate group to Germany - Maria Pankratz is one of them; she was born in Kazakhstan and now lives in Espelkamp, Westphalia .

Both Maria Pankratz and Miriam Toews were registered through the Plautdietsch-Freunde e. V. (Detmold) mediated by Peter Wiens .

The film was funded by the Berlinale's World Cinema Fund (WCF) . The producers were Mantarraya Producciones and NoDream, together with BAC Films, Arte France Cinema, Foprocine and Motel Films as co-producers.

criticism

Olivier Bombarda writes on the Arte website about Stellet Licht that “even in retrospect, 'Lumière Silencieuse' emanates a fascinating feeling” and that this is a feeling of “the elevation of the soul to the divine, like a prayer”. The reason for this: In Stellet Licht, "this so simple story", "the idea of a miracle was brought into play at the last moment," says Bombarda, and the pictures are "of such astonishing beauty".

Awards

Mexico's "Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences" suggested Stellet Licht for nomination for the American Oscar 2008 for best foreign language film in October 2007 .
