The 20th European Film Prize was awarded on December 1, 2007. The award ceremony took place for the tenth time in Berlin . The German actor Jan Josef Liefers and the French actress Emmanuelle Béart , who won the European Film Prize for Best Actress in 2002, took on the moderation in the Arena Berlin . The gala was broadcast on television in 61 countries around the world, in Germany one day later on the Franco-German broadcaster ARTE .

The nominations were announced by the European Film Academy (EFA) on November 3rd, 2007 at the Seville Film Festival . The favorites were the dramas The Last King of Scotland - In the Clutches of Power and The Queen by British directors Kevin Macdonald and Stephen Frears . The two Oscar- winning films received a total of five nominations, but were neglected by Cristian Mungius in the important categories of film and directing for 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days . Mungius Drama, which had won the main prize at the Cannes Film Festival a few months earlier , tells the story of two Romanian students who plan to have one of the unborn children aborted in communist Romania under the dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu . Also with two awards were Frears' Die Queen (best leading actress, best film music), Eran Kolirin's Israeli contribution The Band Next Door (best leading actor, best newcomer film) and Tom Tykwer's bestselling film adaptation The Perfume - The Story of a Murderer (best camera, Prix D'Exellence) that scored points in the technical categories. The co-favorite German contribution On the Other Side by Fatih Akin was honored with the script award, as at the Cannes Film Festival. From an Austrian and Swiss perspective, Ulrich Seidl's drama Import Export and Bettina Oberli's comedy Die Herbstzeitlosen , which will represent their country at the 2008 Academy Awards, were not taken into account .

The 1,800 members of the European Film Academy voted on the winners of the individual categories before the award ceremony. The Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh , the German cameraman Michael Ballhaus and the French directors Alain Resnais and Jean-Luc Godard had already been selected as the winners . Panh received the Prix Arte for his documentary Le papier ne peut pas envelopper la braise , which documents the life of young prostitutes in Phnom Penh ; Resnais for Hearts the Fipresci Prize . Ballhaus and Godard were honored with honorary awards for their services to the film. The latter stayed away from the event. The founding members Jeanne Moreau and Liv Ullmann were among the other guests at the 20th Film Awards , while the laudators and guest speakers included Alicja Bachleda-Curuś , Jean-Marc Barr , Maria Grazia Cucinotta , Mehmet Kurtuluş , Virginie Ledoyen , Sergi López , Mads Mikkelsen , Maia Morgenstern , Johanna ter Steege and Maciej Stuhr performed. The evening was played musically by the Finnish band Leningrad Cowboys , which gained international fame through Aki Kaurismäki's films .
