occupation

The band next door ( original Hebrew title: Bikur ha-tizmoret , ביקור התזמורת , Arabic اللقاء الأخير, DMG al-liqāʾ al-aḫīr ) is an Israeli film released in 2007 . It is the film debut of the director and screenwriter Eran Kolirin .

action

An Egyptian police orchestra from Alexandria has been invited to a cultural festival in Israel. When the musicians arrive at Tel Aviv airport, however, nobody is there to meet them. Colonel Tawfiq Zacharya and his musicians decide to take the bus to their destination.

When buying tickets, however, band member Khaled pronounces the destination incorrectly (Arabs cannot speak a hard "p"), and so the orchestra ends up in the sleepy provincial town of Beit Hatikva instead of Petah Tikva . When the musicians ask Dina, the owner of a small restaurant, about the Arab cultural center, they realize that they are in the wrong place. Dina recognizes her predicament and offers them to spend the night with herself and two families who are friends.

Initially, the Egyptians and their Israeli hosts approach each other with reluctance and fear of contact; Due to the cultural differences and language barriers, there are various, sometimes funny, sometimes tragicomic misunderstandings. In the course of the evening and night, however, intensive conversations and ultimately a friendly relationship develop, especially between the serious Tawfiq and the cheerful Dina. The next day the orchestra departs for its actual destination.

Awards

The band next door received a number of national and international film awards and prizes. The Israeli Film Academy honored the film with eight Ophir Awards , including Best Picture and Best Director and Best Actor . He received the Coup de Coeur jury award at the Cannes International Film Festival . Sasson Gabai was honored with the European Film Awards for his role as Colonel Tawfiq Zacharya . The film received further awards at film festivals in Montreal, Sarajevo, Warsaw and Zurich.

The band next door was submitted as the official Israeli entry to the 2008 Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category . However, AMPAS refused, as English dominated over Arabic and Hebrew in the film.

reception

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung describes the film as “a series of magical sketches, a divertimento in the smallest of spaces” and “a test of the humanity of the conditions under which the peoples of the region have to get along”. The protagonists, stranded in a no man's land and marked by homesickness, remind the reviewer of films by Aki Kaurismäki .

The taz emphasizes the “long, carefully composed shots” and praises the fact that the characters stand for themselves and are not broken down into clichés.

The Lexicon of International Films says: “A melancholy comedy about the extremely timid rapprochement between 'traditionally' hostile nations, which succeeds in pushing political reservations into the background in order to tell of universal human problems, worries, hopes and dreams. An extremely decelerated film that quietly promotes understanding and coexistence. ”^
