2 Tage Paris (original title: 2 Days in Paris ) is a French - German comedy film from 2007 . In addition to the lead role, actress Julie Delpy also directed and was responsible for the script, production, casting, editing and music. The sequel, 2 Days New York , started in German cinemas on July 5, 2012.

action

After a trip to Venice, the Frenchwoman Marion and her American friend Jack stop for two days with Marion's parents in Paris . What Marion sees as a reunion with family, friends and ex-lovers turns into agony for Jack, who speaks no French and is hypochondrically uncomfortable anyway . Marion's quirky father never misses an opportunity to test and provoke Jack, who is supposedly little culture-savvy . Marion's entire family is also familiar with the captivating nude photos that Marion, a full-time photographer, once took of Jack.

Jack is also annoyed by Marion's numerous ex-affairs, whom she meets again in the streets of Paris or at parties. In addition, there is the uncontrolled impulsiveness of the French woman: Marion not only messes with racist taxi drivers, but also loudly insults an unwelcome ex-husband as a pedophile in a restaurant . When Jack finally finds obscene SMs on Marion's cell phone, which another ex-lover sends her regularly, their trip to Paris threatens to turn into a disaster. Marion and Jack move separately through the city to celebrate reconciliation at the end.

background

Julie Delpy, previously known only as an actress, had already written the script for another Paris film. Together with Richard Linklater , she wrote the screenplay for Before Sunset , in which she starred alongside Ethan Hawke , and was promptly nominated for an Oscar for it. In five years of work, she wrote her first own screenplay with 2 Tage Paris , which she also filmed herself.

Delpy described 2 days in Paris as a "Friends & Family project". She cast all roles with friends and family members, including her parents Marie Pillet and Albert Delpy, who are also actors. The only exception is the cast of Daniel Brühl in a minor supporting role. Delpy got to know Brühl at the Berlinale : "I have admired his work for a long time and after his acceptance I wrote the role for him."

The film grossed around $ 20 million in cinemas worldwide.

Reviews

Epd Film described the film as an "embarrassingly unsuccessful copy of Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise ." "Without any charm", "Delpy exhausts all country clichés". That is, "like the entire film, in its unspeakable flatness not funny, but simply unsympathetic". For the lexicon of international film ,on the other hand, 2 days Paris was a “[t] high-profile love comedy with pointed dialogues, at the same time a biting social satire about the differences between America and 'old' Europe”, and “[e] in intelligent film fun as a directorial debut convincing leading actress ”. Björn Helbig from Filmstarts praised the "spotty script" and the direction by Julie Delpy, who "[i] n best Woody Allen manner [...] an American-French couple during a Paris vacation in the cultural faux pas" and don't fail to "occasionally fire accurate shots below the belt".

Rüdiger Suchsland wrote for Telepolis : " Deux Jours à Paris is like its director: Quite funny, incredibly fast and, moreover, very nice to look at."

Awards

Delpy's film won an award at the 2007 International du Films d'Amour Festival in Mons, Belgium . A few months later, 2 days in Paris was nominated for the Jameson Audience Award at the 2007 European Film Awards. Another nomination followed at the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards in the Best First Feature category.

The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title “particularly valuable”.
