European Film Award 2016
The 29th European Film Awards ceremony took place on December 10, 2016 at the National Music Forum in Wrocław , one of two European Capitals of Culture of the year. The prize is awarded by the European Film Academy (EFA). The award for best film was Maren Ades Toni Erdmann , who was able to convert all of his five regular nominations into victories.
The Polish actor Maciej Stuhr hosted the award ceremony.
During the award ceremony, the Russian political activist and performance artist Marija Aljochina remembered the Ukrainian filmmaker Oleh Sentsov and read a message from him. Sentsov was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in Russia in 2015 on suspicion of terrorism.

Jury awards
On November 17, 2016, the winners of the jury awards were announced in Berlin, who were selected by a seven-member jury from the official shortlist for feature films and separately submitted films. The jury included the production designer Benoît Barouh (France), the costume designer Paco Delgado (Spain), the cameraman Martin Gschlacht (Austria, winner 2015), the sound designer Dean Humphreys (United Kingdom), the film editor Era Lapid (Israel) and the make-up artist Waldemar Pokromski (Poland) and the composer Giuliano Taviani (Italy).

Since 2015, before the five nominations were announced, a shortlist of 15 documentaries has been presented, which is compiled by a selection committee consisting of members of the EFA and the European Documentary Network (EDN). Proposals from documentary film festivals as well as individual submissions will be considered. From the 15 pre-selected films, the more than 3000 members of the European Film Academy selected the nominees and the eventual winner.

European University Film Award (EUFA)
The European University Film Award was presented for the first time at the 2016 presentation. The director Feo Aladag , the scientist Dagmar Brunow ( Linné University ), the journalist Luis Martinez Lopez ( El Mundo ) and the film producer Patrick Sobelman decided on the nominations on the basis of this year's shortlist for feature and documentary films. Students from 13 universities in 13 countries choose their favorite film from the nominated entries. A student from each university was sent to a two-day meeting at the beginning of December to debate the winner. The winner was announced in the week of the film award ceremony.
