action

The Algerian farmer Fatah is considered an outsider in his village and is mocked for his attachment to his cow Jacqueline, a French Taranto cattle . Then he received an invitation to come to the agricultural exhibition in Paris with his cow, for which he had applied to no avail for years. He gets a loan from the villagers for the trip. After arriving in Marseille by ferry, he hands a package from his father-in-law to his hated brother-in-law, Hassan, and discovers that Hassan has a secret blonde wife and two children. Then he goes to Paris on foot. After a storm he gets shelter with a woman whose name, to his amusement, is like his cow Jacqueline. At a folk festival, he entertains the visitors with a song recital and is invited to a few rounds of “ Willi ”. In a drunk state, he finally kisses a stout woman and has himself photographed. He gives the woman a card with the email address of the web café in his village, where she will send the photos. There the pictures cause horror and his wife Naïma wants to get a divorce. When Fatah hears about it, he becomes depressed. He now keeps claiming that he couldn't help it, that it was only “Willi's” that was to blame, which in the course of the trip becomes a household word.

When Jacqueline gets stuck in the mud and injures herself, Fatah has to enlist the help of the financially distressed castle estate owner Philippe, who takes him in. Despite his initial dislike, the two become friends. With Philippe's help, Fatah writes a "love letter" to his wife. When Fatah set off again, he ran into a rally of protesting farmers. There a film team becomes aware of him and makes a television report about his trip. Fatah is arrested during the violent demonstration by the peasants, losing Jacqueline. Philippe drives to him in his old cattle truck and ends up in Fatah's cell. After they are released, Hassan joins them. Together they find Jacqueline on the way to the slaughterhouse. Meanwhile, Fatah and Jacqueline are becoming stars on the internet.

Finally they come to the agricultural exhibition in Paris. The cow awards have already started, but due to the enthusiasm of the fans, they will eventually be allowed. Fatah and his cow are celebrated and receive the specially created audience award. Fatah exuberantly thanks Philippe and Hassan, whose "secret" he reveals, and greets his village, which is sitting completely in front of the television screen. In the credits he returns to his village as a hero.

background

The scenes set in Algeria were shot in Morocco. Three different cows were used. Leading actor Fatsah Bouyahmed already played in Hamidi's 2013 film Né quelque part , for which Ibrahim Maalouf had also recorded trumpet solos.

reception

Cinema .de finds "some parts of the film characterized by an exaggerated idealism" and "the episode with an impoverished landed gentry owner is a bit too sentimental", but says that "Fatsah Bouyahmed with his stunning charm" "catches it with ease". Filmstarts.de considers the film to be a "no-frills feel-good fairy tale - nice, happy and a little naive".

Awards
