Ibrahim Maalouf (born December 5, 1980 in Beirut ) is a French-Lebanese musician ( trumpeter and piano player), composer and arranger .

biography

Ibrahim Maalouf comes from a family of academics and artists. He is the son of trumpeter Nassim Maalouf and pianist Nada Maalouf, nephew of writer Amin Maalouf and grandchild of Rushdi Maalouf, journalist, poet and musicologist. Ibrahim Maalouf plays a quarter-tone trumpet equipped with four valves, like his father before, but also Don Ellis and others. It makes it possible to play Arabic maquam music .

In July 2010, he received the Prix Frank Ténot as “French New Discovery” (“Révélation”) of the year, the “ Les Victoires du Jazz ” jazz prize in Juan-les-Pins.

Childhood and youth

Because of the civil war, his family fled Lebanon to France. Maalouf lived with his parents and his sister Layla, who was two years older than him, near Paris, where he attended school until the age of 17. He passed his Abitur at the Lycée Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire in Étampes (in the Essonne department ), with a focus on mathematics .

From the age of seven he received trumpet lessons from his father. His father was a student of Maurice André . He taught him classical technique, the baroque, classical, modern and contemporary repertoire as well as classical Arabic music and the art of improvisation. Maalouf started playing the piccolo trumpet very early . At the age of nine he accompanied his father as a duo partner through Europe and the Middle East with a baroque repertoire by Vivaldi, Purcell, Albinoni, etc. So he discovered the audience and the audience discovered him. At the age of 15 he played the trumpet part in a chamber orchestra in Bach's 2nd Brandenburg Concerto , which for many trumpeters is considered to be the most difficult work in the repertoire for baroque trumpet . A few years later he met Maurice André, who recommended him to become a professional musician.

Artistic career

After passing the entrance examination at the Paris Regional Conservatory (Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Paris), he completed a two-year training course as a student of Gérard Boulanger. He then continued his studies at the renowned Paris Conservatory CNSM in the class of Antoine Curé . During his five years of study he took part in numerous national and international trumpet competitions.

Between 1999 and 2003 Maalouf was the winner of 15 competitions around the world. Since 2006 he has been teaching the trumpet at the Aubervilliers Conservatory - La Courneuve . Maalouf is regularly invited to give master classes and solo concerts in France or abroad, especially in the USA, where he has entered into a long-term collaboration with Kansas State University . Maalouf has already been appointed several times to represent France at the ITG ( International Trumpet Guild ), which brings together trumpeters from all over the world for concerts and master classes every year.

Maalouf also composes classical works for various ensembles. He composed a commissioned work for the “ Printemps de Bourges ” music festival , which was performed there and in the Brussels Cathedral.

For his album Maalouf received the award for the best world music album at the Victoires de la Musique 2014. In 2016 he was awarded the Jazz-Echo as Instrumentalist of the Year (Brass). The following year he was again awarded the Victoires as best live musician.

Encounters and collaboration

Even though Maalouf competed intensively at times, he devoted himself in particular to improvisation and composition, which are strongly influenced by Arabic music and jazz. During his studies at the Conservatory of Paris (CNSM) Maalouf always attended jazz courses in addition to classical trumpet lessons. His initially self-taught training in jazz can be traced back to experiences in big bands and other groups. He often plays in Paris jazz clubs, often changing ensembles and compositions in search of his own sound.

In 2000 the producer Marc-Antoine Moreau introduced him to the cellist Vincent Ségal. In the following years Ibrahim met many other musicians such as Amadou & Mariam , Matthieu Chedid , Lhasa de Sela , Angel Parra, Jeanne Cherhal , Arthur H and Marcel Khalifé .

In 2007 and 2009 he accompanied the French singer Vincent Delerm on a tour and played the piano, Wurlitzer piano, vibraphone, synthesizer, drums and trumpet. During this time he also finished his second album, which was released in 2009. In 2011 he worked on André Manoukian's album Melanchology and in 2012 on Trilok Gurtu's album Spellbound . In 2013 he played at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival with the hr big band , then with Alfredo Rodríguez on Tocororo . In 2016 he celebrated his stage anniversary in the sold out AccorHotels Arena (CD / DVD box Live in Paris ). Maalouf composed the music for two films by the French director Safy Nebbou .

The musical work

In 1999 Maalouf presented his compositions to the public for the first time. His first group, Farah, was jazz-oriented and at the same time strongly inspired by oriental music. The line-up of this group consisted of saxophone, ney , flute, piano, double bass, guitar, buzuq and oriental drums.

In 2004 Maalouf came into contact with the electronics division thanks to the encounter with Lhasa de Sela. Through his collaboration with pop and rock singers, he discovered other styles of music than jazz, classical or Arabic music. In 2006 Maalouf met Alejandra Norambuena Skira from SACEM , the French collecting society for music, who introduced him to producer Jean-Louis Perrier. Malouf and his band arranged a concert at the New Morning Jazz Club in Paris. With this concert Maalouf finally made a name for himself in France in the field of Jazz'Electros and Oriental Rock music .

His compositions and the way he plays are very much inspired by Arabic music. Nevertheless, Maalouf succeeds in adapting his music to the current sound styles through the musical instruments used (bass guitar, electric guitar, drums, Arabic drums and vibraphone), whereby rock, electro and jazz radio alternate and complement each other.

In 2012 he was commissioned by the Cinémathèque française to set a silent film to music: La proie du vent by René Clair . While recording in New York City, he also played with Dave Douglas . His album Illusions recognized Bayern 5 as “CD of the week”. It is "an extremely colorful production on which the brilliantly well-rehearsed band around Ibrahim Maalouf builds its own musical cosmos from set pieces from jazz, rock, funk and Arab tradition."

Artistic creation Maaloufs with its cultural roots of modern music, jazz and rock music was the subject of a 2004 and 2005 realized by director Christophe Trahand and produced by Cocottes Minutes documentary . The filmmakers Maalouf accompanied his concerts for a few months and show how Maalouf seeks his inspiration and the importance of the relationship to his country of origin.
