Cheikh N'Digel Lô (* 1959 in Bobo Dioulasso , Burkina Faso ) is a Senegalese musician.

Life

Born in 1959 in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso of Senegalese parents, Cheikh Lô grew up in Burkina Faso. Instead of preparing for university studies like his siblings, he joined the Orchester Volta Jazz, which plays Cuban and Congolese pop music as well as traditional music from Burkina Faso. In 1978 Lô moved to Senegal to play in various Mbalax bands. As a guitarist he founded a band with some French musicians and musicians from the Ivory Coast in 1985, with which he moved to Paris in 1987 for studio recordings . After the band broke up a short time later, Cheikh Lô stayed as a substitute musician in Paris to experiment with his own musical style. For this purpose, Lô mixed his own Mbalax origins with reggae and the Congolese soukous style. In Paris he met Papa Wemba , among others , and recorded his first cassette in Dakar in 1990 . In 1995 Lô's debut album Ne La Thiass was released , which was produced by Youssou N'Dour and for which he was to appear in the opening act on his European tour.

Cheikh Lô is a member of the Baye Fall , a group within the Muslim Muridiyya Brotherhood . As such, he is encouraged to wear dreadlocks , which is often mistaken for the Rastafarian environment .
