B5 aktuell is a German-language radio channel and the information wave of Bavarian radio .

history

Station logo until October 2007

B5 aktuell started on May 6, 1991 at 6:00 a.m. and took over an additional frequency chain from BR4 , through which the evening ARD guest worker broadcasts, as well as in some cases special state parliament debates or other events, were taken over. The model was the French news channel France Info from Radio France . Later, other waves of information in Germany adopted the concept of B5 aktuell, such as MDR Info (1992), Inforadio vom RBB (1995), NDR Info (1998), hr-info (2004), SWRinfo (2012) and in Switzerland DRS 4 News (2007). As one of the first ARD radio stations on the Internet, B5 has been broadcast online since November 1995. On September 8, 2011, B5 was recently awarded the German Radio Prize in the "Best News Format" category.

program

Working days

The news that recurs every 15 minutes on weekdays is particularly characteristic of the program structure of the wave. The info blocks for the full and half hour are designed to be 8 minutes long and are presented by editors. In these info blocks there are also correspondent contributions and quotes. At xx.15 and xx.45 o'clock, five-minute messages without recordings arrive. Since 2019, these messages have been shortened to two minutes Monday to Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and inserted into B5 Bayern in the remaining three minutes. They are read by news anchors. The following minutes until the next news block are filled with various in-depth articles on specific topics according to a program clock, so at XY: 08 a block with news only from Bavaria and XY: 55 a block with sports news.

B5 aktuell also broadcasts selected sporting events such as B. International matches of the national soccer team, the Champions League (here preferably the matches of FC Bayern Munich ) and the ARD Bundesliga conference live, partly in full length, otherwise in excerpts.

In order to expand the range of live broadcasts, the offshoot B5 plus was launched on October 8, 2007. In addition to broadcasting sporting events, it also broadcasts live broadcasts from the German Bundestag and the Bavarian State Parliament.

The joint night program of the ARD Infonacht is taken over by the MDR every day from 0:00 to 6:00 .

Special case Sunday

The schedule on Sunday is completely different. Messages are only sent every 30 minutes. During the rest of the time, various magazines from the specialist editorial offices are broadcast. The "usual" information blocks with subsequent sports news are only available at 9:00 am, 12:00 pm, 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm.

Special case holiday

The program "Notes from all over the world" is mostly broadcast on public holidays. The BR correspondents broadcast 25-minute reports from different countries.

From Monday to Saturday (6 a.m. - 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. - 6 p.m.) the following transmission schedule applies:

Appearance and market share

B5 currently broadcasts from 6 a.m. to midnight (the rest of the time, the ARD info night is taken over) and is broadcast across Bavaria via ultra-short wave FM and via DAB + on channel 11D. In South Tyrol , the station is broadcast by the Südtirol broadcaster in the DAB + standard. B5 can currently be received across Europe via DVB-S and DVB-C. The program can be heard worldwide via live stream. There are also individual programs as podcasts . The shortwave broadcasting (digital on 6085 kHz in DRM mode since 2 May 2005) on the transmitter Ismaning was discontinued on October 1 of 2010.

The currently appropriate RDS-PTY code for B5 is 02 (“Current Affairs”), since the vast majority of the broadcasting time is about background information, debates, analyzes and the like. Nevertheless, the RDS-PTY code 01 ("News") is used continuously; a nationwide exception. Car radios in particular often offer the option of highlighting news as well as traffic reports using dynamic PTY: for example, Deutschlandfunk generally transmits the code 03 ("Information"), but only 01 during the news, which means that radios can briefly change stations and adjust the volume . The uninterrupted transmission of the message code at B5 aktuell therefore results in an effect known as station kidnapping, because the radio remains on the transmitter until the device's message function is deactivated or the transmission area is left again.

B5 currently has around 590,000 listeners in Bavaria every day, which corresponds to a market share of 5.3 percent. There are also around 40,000 in other federal states.
