Marcel Khalifé (born June 10, 1950 in Amchit , Lebanon ) is a Lebanese musician and composer .

Life

After studying at the Conservatory in Beirut , where he was also a lecturer, he became a freelance musician with many concerts worldwide. He is also known for his new take on the oud instrument.

In 1976, in the middle of the Lebanese civil war , Khalifé founded his ensemble "Al Mayadine", which made a name for itself in the Arab world with its committed and socially critical songs. He set the poems of the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish to music . "To my mother" (Ila Ummi) and "Rita and the rifle" (Rita wa-l-Bunduqiyye) are particularly well-known.

His symphonic works open up new avenues for modern Arabic music. He published an extensive oud textbook.

In 2005, Khalife was named an “Artist for Peace” by UNESCO .
