Amadou and Mariam are a musical duo from Mali , consisting of the couple Mariam Doumbia (vocals, born April 15, 1958 in Bamako ) and Amadou Bagayoko (guitar, vocals, born October 24, 1954 in Bamako).

The couple, known as “The Blind Couple from Mali”, came together at the Institute for Young Blind People in the mid-1970s.

Band history

Between 1974 and 1980 Amadou played with Ambassadeurs du Motel . In 1980 he married Mariam. From then on, the two made music together and started a tour in Burkina Faso in 1985 . They then moved to the Ivory Coast and recorded numerous cassettes, which gave them a high profile throughout West Africa.

The album Sou Ni Tile sold very well in France and ensured that Amadou and Mariam could perform at various world music festivals around the world. In 2004 Manu Chao produced the album Dimanche à Bamako with them , the single Sénégal Fast Food of which became quite well known.

In 2006, together with Herbert Grönemeyer , they both recorded time that something is turning (Celebrate the Day) , the official song for the 2006 World Cup .

Her album Welcome to Mali , released in 2008, was produced by the British musician Damon Albarn from Blur and was nominated for a Grammy in the category "World Music" in 2009.

On June 10, 2010 they performed at the opening concert for the World Cup in Johannesburg .

Music genre

In their music they mix traditional Malian melodies with rock guitars, violin , trumpet , the Arabic longitudinal flute ney , trombone , Dogonian percussion instruments and occasionally the Indian tabla and the Indian string instrument sarangi .
