Formerly on (mostly) 56, now on (approx.) 40 pages, each issue is devoted to current topics in the music and live entertainment industry. Trend discussions , interviews , background information, topic specials , trade focal points, market statistics, company portraits, live events, program planners , overviews of addresses and contacts and a detailed chart service are part of the regular content.

history

In mid-March 1993, the Munich publisher Ulrich Scheele planned another magazine for the entertainment media industry in his Entertainment Media publishing house, which he founded in 1981. He spoke with the in Stuttgart live music journalist Manfred Gillig-Degrave, the success in various hi journals such as audio worked, but just with the music magazine Zounds had been shipwrecked on the procedure from. The Popkomm , which took place in August, seemed suitable as an introductory forum and its opening date was therefore targeted as the completion date. On July 5, 1993 the zero number was available and the introductory campaign started . Issue 32/1993 officially started on August 9th. In the following numbers , the service was expanded bit by bit , starting with news from Austria and Switzerland . Themed specials were published for the first time in 1994 ( independent scene, multimedia law, radio landscape, folk music ). Furthermore, bi-weekly jazz charts were introduced and the first “who's who” poster with the contact details of label employees was enclosed.

Gillig-Degrave was editor-in-chief from July 1993 to July 2000. He then switched to Hannibal Verlag , which specializes in music books , but returned to MusikWoche with effect from January 1, 2002 . He has been the editor since July 2015 . Norbert Schiegl and Knut Schlinger took his place. In 2000/2001 Christian Stolberg (previously WOM Magazin , later Musikexpress ) replaced Gillig-Degrave as editor-in-chief.

In 2007 the publishing house Gruner + Jahr acquired the entertainment media publications from Scheele and the Ebner publishing group, which meanwhile held a share of around 83 percent. In 2014, after the strategic alignment of the major Hamburg company, they were up for sale again. The newly founded Cologne-based company Busch Business Media took hold of it and since then has been selling it along with the range of magazines for MusikWoche and Blickpunkt: Film . The editorial office was only marginally relocated from Dornach near Munich to the Bavarian capital. According to market experts, the proceeds for Gruner + Jahr were in the "higher single-digit" million range.

Own spelling and mode of publication

The custom spelling varies from time to time. Initially “MUSIKWoche” was set, lastly “musik.woche”. It is mostly quoted as "MusikWoche".

The weekly issue is only available by subscription . It is dated on the Monday of the respective calendar week. A double issue appears at the turn of the year.
