24 weeks is a German feature film by director Anne Zohra Berrached from 2016 . The film was premiered on February 14, 2016 as part of the 66th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) as the only German contribution and competed there in the international competition for the Golden Bear . After the film distributor Neue Visionen secured the rights to the film, it was shown in German cinemas on September 22, 2016.

action

Astrid is a cabaret artist and is in a relationship with her manager Markus. They both have a child together. When Astrid was six months pregnant with their second child, the couple found out during a routine check-up that their unborn child would be born with Down's syndrome . The couple must decide whether to give birth to the mentally and physically challenged child or to initiate a late abortion . After further examinations it turns out that the child also has a serious heart defect and therefore would have to undergo an operation immediately after the birth. The severity of the mental and physical disability cannot be precisely determined before the birth. After many arguments and discussions inside and outside the family, Astrid realizes that she alone can make the decision. She decides to have the child at six months of age. She then goes public with this decision.

background

24 weeks was not implemented purely scenic. Rather, the film is a hybrid form with documentary elements, like Anne Zohra Berrached's feature film debut Zwei Mütter (2013). Berrached emphasizes that she “wanted to merge reality and fiction.” While the family is embodied by actors - mother Julia Jentsch , father Bjarne Mädel , grandmother Johanna Gastdorf , child Emilia Pieske - the doctors, psychologists and the other children play each other, that appear in the film themselves. This gives the film a special, authentic note.

The main character's cabaret appearances were filmed during real comedy shows (including Nuhr in the First , Ladies Night , 3satFestival ) with the moderators Dieter Nuhr , Gerburg Jahnke and other cabaret artists . Astrid meets her cabaret colleagues Sebastian Pufpaff , Abdelkarim and Barbara Ruscher . There are also other cameo appearances such as by Stefan Kretzschmar and Thomas Koschwitz .

The film contains images of a fetus in the woman's womb, which have never been shown on a European screen in this quality. They were created using a minimally invasive camera during prenatal operations.

Berrached lets the two main characters from Two Mothers appear and continues their story. She dedicates her work to Khodadad and Fee, two handicapped children, one born, the other aborted.

It was shot in Leipzig, u. a. at the Schauburg and on Equipagenweg in Markkleeberg .

Awards

The film was selected by a jury of German cinemas and art house cinemas with the Guild Film Award named best competition entry at the Berlinale. The laudation emphasized the “extraordinary courage” with which the film devoted itself to the topic, as well as the “great actors and the great closeness to the protagonists” who “gave this film a force that was deeply moving”.

At the Filmkunstfest Mecklenburg-Vorpommern , the film received the award for best director, the audience award and the DEFA Foundation award .

For the film, Anne Zohra Berrached was awarded the Studio Hamburg Young Talent Award in the category Best Director in 2016. In 2016, together with Julia Jentsch , she received the Saarland Medien GmbH prize for the Günter Rohrbach Film Prize .

At the German Film Award 2017 , 24 weeks received the silver film award and was nominated in the categories of best director, best screenplay and best female leading actress.
