Zwei Mütter is a German film drama from 2013 . Directed by Anne Zohra Berrached .

action

Katja and Isabelle are a couple and want to have a child. The legal and social hurdles that have to be overcome shake their relationship. Both of them quickly realize how difficult it is to have a child as a homosexual, because one sperm bank after the other rejects them. After a long search they find a doctor who is willing to perform costly inseminations even for homosexual women . This plan also goes wrong and fails again and again. Since every attempt means a high financial outlay, the two women want to procure the semen privately and carry out a fertilization themselves.

background

To this day there is no legal regulation in Germany on how lesbian couples can have children. Since every child in this country has the right to have a father, doctors who carry out artificial insemination with anonymous sperm donors run a great risk: Will the lesbian couple find themselves in financial difficulties without a (biological and / or legal) Father can be named, who could contribute financially to the stabilization, the doctor is held responsible and can ultimately be obliged to pay for maintenance claims. Few doctors take this risk, which is why many pairs of women go to look for a sperm donor online.

The film was created as a scenic and documentary hybrid, in which only the two main characters were cast with actors. All other characters are amateur actors who embody themselves.

The plot is continued in the film 24 Weeks by the same director.

criticism

"As sensitively as it is authentically staged and played, well-researched film about a lesbian couple who wants a child and who, in implementing this wish, comes up against various limits that are dictated by the legal and social framework."

"Due to its outer shape, but also the very successful guidance of the numerous amateur actors, the film shows us a convincing portrait of a difficult love relationship between two women and their desire for togetherness and family"
