Stefan Kretzschmar (born February 17, 1973 in Leipzig ) is a former German handball player . He is director of sport for the handball Bundesliga club Füchse Berlin and works as a handball expert for Sky Germany .

At the age of six, Stefan Kretzschmar began to play handball. At the age of twelve he came to the training center in Berlin and later switched to the children's and youth sports school of SC Dynamo Berlin , where his coach Ulrich Fietkorn put him in the left wing position . Two years later he won the GDR youth championship with SC Dynamo Berlin and became a player in the youth team of the German handball association. In 1989 Kretzschmar became a player in the A-youth and later also in the junior selection of the German Handball Federation (DHB).

In the 1991/92 season he became a regular in the Bundesliga team of SV Blau-Weiß Spandau , which shortly before merged with SC Dynamo Berlin. With 125 goals, he was the club's most successful goalscorer and the sixth-best thrower in the Bundesliga Group North. In 1993 Kretzschmar moved to VfL Gummersbach (coach Heiner Brand ).

On October 8, 1993 he made his debut in the German national team against Switzerland (25:21) under national coach Arno Ehret . In the 1993/94 season he was the club's most successful thrower with 142 goals. He was also voted German handball player of the year for the first time in 1994 . In the same year he took part with the national team at the European Championship in Portugal (9th place) and was then elected to the "All-Star Team" (world selection).

In 1995 he was German handball player of the year for the second time and again the most successful thrower of his club (141 goals). In 1996 he took part in the Olympic Games in Atlanta with the national team and was kicked out of the national team in the same year by the new national coach Heiner Brand due to disagreements.

On July 1, 1996 Kretzschmar moved to SC Magdeburg and won the German Supercup with this club in 1996 . On October 31, 1997 he had his comeback against Norway in the national team under coach Heiner Brand. In 1998 he took part with the national team at the European Championship in Italy (3rd place). In Sweden he won the World Cup a year later with the national team and was then re-elected to the "All-Star Team". He also won the EHF Cup for the first time with SC Magdeburg this year and took part in the World Cup in Egypt (5th place). In 1999 he took part with the national team at the Supercup in Berlin (5th place) and with SC Magdeburg at the European Club Championship in Magdeburg (2nd place), where he was voted the best player of the tournament.

In the election for “Player of the Year 2000”, he finished second behind Daniel Stephan . In 2000 he took part with the national team at the European Championship in Croatia (9th place) and was the only German player in the European selection team in the game against Slovenia. He also took part in the same year with the national team at the Olympic Games in Sydney (5th place) and a year later at the World Cup in France (8th place). In 2001 Kretzschmar was with the SC Magdeburg winner of the EHF Cup and German champion of the 2000/01 season. He also won the German Supercup and the European Club Championship with SC Magdeburg and the Supercup in Riesa with the national team . In 2002 he took part in the European Championship in Sweden (2nd place) and took 2nd place in the DHB Cup with SC Magdeburg .

On April 27, 2002 he was the first German team to win the EHF Champions League with SC Magdeburg and 6 months later the European Club Championship. In November 2002 he took part with the national team at the World Cup in Sweden (3rd place) and in 2003 at the World Cup in Portugal (2nd place), where he broke his little finger in the semifinals against France and was out for a month. In November 2003 he took part with the national team in the Supercup in Leipzig / Riesa and was voted Player of the Year in Saxony-Anhalt. Due to an operation, Kretzschmar had to cancel his participation in the 2004 European Championships in Slovenia, where Germany became European champions. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, he wanted to win the gold medal as a replacement for the lost EM gold medal. The team presented itself in a fighting and playful way and reached the final. There they lost to Croatia and Kretzschmar won the silver medal.

He then resigned alongside some other top players from the national team, for which he completed 218 international matches and scored 821 goals. The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote about the end of the golden generation.

On April 29, 2007, he won the EHF Cup for the third time with the SCM. With the end of the 2006/07 season, he ended his active career. In 421 Bundesliga games, he scored 1694 goals. After retiring on June 30, 2007, he became sports director at SC Magdeburg on July 1, 2007. On August 31, 2009, Kretzschmar ended his work at SCM.

From 2009 to 2019, Stefan Kretzschmar was an honorary member of the supervisory board of SC DHfK Leipzig Handball Verwaltung GmbH. In May 2013 he also worked alongside Michael Biegler as a trainer at SC DHfK Leipzig.

On September 1, 2019, it was announced that Kretzschmar will be employed as the Sports Director at Füchsen Berlin from the beginning of 2020 .

Kretzschmar worked as a handball expert for Sport1 from September 2009 to June 2017 . He then moved to Sky Deutschland , which had acquired the rights to broadcast Bundesliga matches, in the same role . There he is also host of Kretzschmar on Sundays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. - the handball talk that is broadcast from the hall there after the “top game”.

His father, Peter Kretzschmar , was a 66-time GDR national player ( field handball ) and handball coach of the GDR women's national handball team . His mother, Waltraud Kretzschmar , was trained by Peter Kretzschmar, she was 217 times GDR national player and was 1971, 1975 and 1978 world champion and 1976 Olympic runner-up with the GDR selection.

In 1998 Stefan Kretzschmar married the Cuban Maria Linares. Their daughter Lucie-Marie (* 2000) also plays handball and was part of the German national youth team. He separated in 2000 and divorced in 2003. From 2000 to 2004 he was in a relationship with the swimmer Franziska van Almsick . Then he was with an Austrian until mid-summer 2005. From 2007 he lived with his former wife again. Their son was born on April 11, 2008. The couple remarried in June 2009, after which they separated again.
