The 23rd presentation of the European Film Prize ( Estonian 23rd Euroopa Filmiauhinnad ) took place on December 4, 2010. After the television gala broadcast in 44 countries had been organized in the Ruhr area in the previous year , Tallinn followed as the venue in 2010 . The Estonian capital is one of the European Capitals of Culture in 2011. This was the first time that the award ceremony took place in the Baltic States .
In cooperation with the Estonian Ministry of Culture, the Estonian Cultural Endowment, the public broadcaster Eesti Rahvusringhääling and the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival , the presentation of the European Film Prize 2010 was held in the Nokia Concert Hall in Tallinn's Solaris conference center, which has 1,830 seats. 1400 guests were expected. The German comedian and actress Anke Engelke and the Estonian actor Märt Avandi could be won as moderators . Engelke had already moderated the award ceremony last year .
The award ceremony was offered as a live stream over the Internet. In Germany, the gala will be broadcast one day later on the Franco-German television broadcaster Arte .
Favorite films
The nominations were announced by the European Film Academy (EFA) on November 6, 2010 at the European Film Festival in Seville . The favorites were The Ghostwriter by Roman Polański (7 nominations) and Lebanon by Samuel Maoz (5 nominations and one nomination for best debut film). In addition to the prizes for the best European film, the two films also had opportunities in the categories of director and script. Polański's thriller lived up to its role as a favorite and won the European Film Awards in six categories, including Best Picture , Best Director and Best Screenplay . As a result of the introduction of new categories, the record for the Italian contribution Gomorrah - Journey to the Empire of the Camorra , which had won five awards in 2008, was broken . Polański thanked for the prizes via live stream .
Polański's film focuses on a ghostwriter (played by Ewan McGregor ) who revises the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister ( Pierce Brosnan ) and comes across inconsistencies. The European co-production was represented in the competition at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival in 2010 and won the directing award. Lebanon , the debut feature film by Israeli director Samuel Maoz , won the awards for Best Cinematography and Best First Work . The film had competed at the 66th Venice International Film Festival in 2009 and won the main prize of the Italian film festival with the Golden Lion . Maoz processed his own experiences and told of an Israeli tank crew who advanced into hostile terrain at the time of the Lebanon War in 1982 .
Bal - Honig by Semih Kaplanoğlu (3 nominations), who was awarded the main prize at the Berlinale 2010 and is the Turkish candidate for the Oscar abroad next year, was also considered in the category of best European film but did not receive an award . Xavier Beauvois ' drama Von Menschen und Göttern , France's Oscar nominee for next year, did not go beyond his two nominations . The film is based on a true story and tells of a group of Cistercian monks (played by Lambert Wilson , Michael Lonsdale , Philippe Laudenbach and Jacques Herlin , among others ) who are victims of fundamentalist terror in Algeria. Come on either a nomination but also unprämiert remained the Argentine-Spanish co-production in their eyes by Juan Jose Campanella , Argentina's Oscar winner in the category Best Foreign Language Film, and the German contribution Soul Kitchen by Fatih Akin , the 2009 Venice Lebanon was inferior . In the award of the director's award, Polański prevailed against Olivier Assayas (Carlos - The Jackal) , Kaplanoğlu, Maoz, Polański and the Italian Paolo Virzì ( La prima cosa bella , Italy's candidate for the 2011 Oscar abroad).
Other German filmmakers were represented in secondary categories. Sibel Kekilli , who this year received the German Film Prize for the honor killing drama Die Fremde , was together with the Croatian Zrinka Cvitešić ( Between Us Paradise ) , the British Lesley Manville ( Another Year ) and the Dutch Lotte Verbeek ( Nothing Personal ) Represented in the Best Actress category , but had to admit defeat to the Frenchwoman Sylvie Testud ( Lourdes ), who stayed away from the award . The best actor was Ewan McGregor ( The Ghostwriter ) , who was also prevented from filming, against the Dane Jakob Cedergren ( Submarino ) , the Italian Elio Germano ( actor award at the 63rd Cannes International Film Festival 2010 for La nostra vita ), the Romanian George Piştereanu ( Eu când vreau să fluier, fluier) and the Spaniard Luis Tosar ( Goya Prize Winner 2010 for Celda 211 ). The German Albrecht Konrad won the award for best production design for his performance at The Ghostwriter . This category, together with that for the best cut, replaces the previously awarded Prix D'Exellence , in which make-up and costume designers were also nominated in previous years.
The German-Austrian contribution Der Räuber by Benjamin Heisenberg , which was on the shortlist, had not received a nomination for the European Film Prize . Likewise, the German coproduction Mein Glück by Sergei Loznitsa and the Swiss contributions Film socialisme by Jean-Luc Godard and Giulia's Disappearance by Christoph Schaub were not shortlisted.
The 2300 members of the European Film Academy voted on the winners of the individual categories before the award ceremony. The Swiss actor Bruno Ganz and the Lebanese composer Gabriel Yared, who lives in France , were already the winners . Ganz was nominated twice for the actor's award in 2000 for Bread and Tulips and in 2004 for Der Untergang . He received the European Film Award for a Lifetime Achievement . Yared was honored in the Best European Performance in World Cinema category. For his soundtrack to Anthony Minghella's The English Patient , he received an Oscar, BAFTA Award and a Grammy in 1997 . In 2006, Yared had competed in vain for the European Film Awards for his work on The Lives of Others .
As part of the award ceremony, the Prix Eurimages, with which European co-producers are honored, was awarded for the fourth time, this time to Zeynep Özbatur . Özbatur, head of the Turkish production company Zeyno Filmproduktion , has in the past been responsible for award-winning productions such as Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Jahreszeiten - Iklimler (2006) and Drei Affen (2008). The directors Claude Chabrol and Mario Monicelli, who died in 2010, were remembered during the gala . The productions nominated for Best Film were presented in short video clips in which Estonian citizens, like fishermen, pilots or architects, spoke about the films.
