action

The film begins in the present, when turtle friends Sammy and Ray are eagerly waiting to become grandfathers. Meanwhile, old Sammy tells about his birth, which took place 50 years earlier on the same beach. After Sammy has struggled to hatch from the egg, he is caught by a seagull . Sammy manages to spit sand in the seagull's eyes, whereupon she squints and lets go of him. In the air, the seagull collides with another who in turn carries the turtle girl Shelly in her beak. After the seagulls collide, Sammy and Shelly fall. While Shelly falls onto the soft beach and reaches the sea with the other turtles , Sammy remains lying on the hard driftwood , where he falls asleep from exhaustion. When he wakes up again, he's floating in the open sea. Here he befriends the leatherback turtle Ray.

The two of them wandered through the Pacific Ocean for 10 years , where they met people for the first time. During an encounter with the Kraken Slim, they overhear an oil tanker contaminating their waters. Some time later, Ray and Sammy get caught in the trawls of fishing trawlers . They are separated and the severely weakened Sammy is thrown back into the sea. He is brought to the coast of California by a friendly dolphin , where he is nursed by Snow, a hippie woman, and kept as pets together with the turtle Vera and the cat Fluffy. When the hippies notice that Sammy and Vera don't want to mate, they let Vera go.

On Christmas Eve, the hippies paint Sammy a peace sign on the tank. Snow reads from Jules Verne's Journey around the Earth in 80 Days and Sammy notices that you can travel around the world through a secret passage. During a police raid , the hippie commune has to flee and leaves Sammy behind. Sammy decides to return to the sea. In the ocean current, Sammy gets his head tangled in a plastic bag and threatens to suffocate. But Vera rescues him and both swim to an algae forest. Suddenly they notice how a young turtle girl is attacked by a shark and save her life. Sammy notices that the turtle girl is Shelly, his childhood sweetheart.

Together they decide to look for the secret passage. You reach the Panama Canal , which Sammy believes is the secret passage. After successful adventures with a giant snake , a crocodile , piranhas and a bird of prey you will find the zone where the ships sail through the canal. Shelly is separated from Sammy by the suction of a ship's propeller and driven into the sea. Desperate, Sammy continues swimming without Shelly. Some time later he meets the older pair of turtles Günther and Angelika, who tell him that they met Shelly. Sammy finds new hope and decides to keep looking for Shelly.

On his journey south, Sammy finds a refrigerator that has been dumped by a freighter and uses it as a means of transportation. After a while he meets a seagull who tells him that she saw Shelly on the way to the Arctic Ocean and then a fin whale that is being chased by whalers . Sammy and the whale narrowly escape the harpoon , which hits the refrigerator and destroys it. Sammy is rescued from the ice-cold water by opponents of whaling and brought to their boat, where he sees Shelly for a short time.

Sammy and Shelly end up in an animal shelter where they are nursed up. While Shelly is released into the sea after a short time, Sammy meets Snow and Fluffy again. After Sammy is released, he meets two turtle girls who ask him for help. You swim to an old sea freight container that is standing on a slope and is about to crash. Sammy's friend Ray is trapped in this container. Sammy manages to open the rear doors and, shortly before the container crashes, free Ray. Then they swim to the wreck of a Spanish galley where Ray's friend Rita lives. When Sammy asks Rita about Shelly, she advises him to look for her in the galley. But here he has to watch Shelly flirting with the male turtle Robbie. Sammy tells Rita and Ray about their disappointing encounter, who then explain to him that Robbie is a playboy and already has a girlfriend. Together with Ray and Albert, a shark that has lost its teeth, they fake an attack on Shelly. Sammy can save Shelly again and finally wins her heart. The wedding takes place a little later. In the final scene, Sammy helps his grandson to get out of the egg-laying hole.

criticism

“With Sammy's adventure, Belgian Ben Stassen has succeeded in making an animated film that is extremely kitschy, but visually thrilling, and is one of the first films to make impressive use of 3D technology. […] In view of the outstanding images, one can get over the fact that the plot of Sammy's adventure is not the most original and that it is sometimes interspersed with a somewhat unsubtle ecological message. "

- Programmkino.de

“Nothing works without 3-D. Almost every computer-animated cartoon now tries to overwhelm the viewer with spatial images. [...] The 3-D effects are so extreme that the viewer stumbles out of the cinema after 90 minutes. [...] So although "Sammy's Adventure" offers a number of original episodes and characters, the story itself only works to a limited extent. "

Others

An approximately 15-minute short version of the film in " 4D " was shown in Germany in Hansa-Park and Europa-Park . In the Netherlands this short film was shown in the Attractiepark Slagharen . In the amusement park version of the film, different voice actors can be heard than in the long theatrical version. Sammy's Adventure was released on DVD on March 8, 2011 and on Blu-ray Disc on April 7, 2011 .
