Achim Reichel
Achim Reichel (born January 28, 1944 in Wentorf near Hamburg , Schleswig-Holstein ) is a German musician , composer and music producer .
life and work
Reichel founded the band The Rattles in 1960 , which, alongside The Lords, became one of the most successful German beat bands and toured England with the Rolling Stones in 1963 . This was followed by 30 single releases by 1966, followed by a tour of Germany with the Beatles and the movie Hurra, the Rattles are coming . As a studio backing band for Johnny Hallyday , the Rattles recorded 1965 Let the people talk and It's Monkeytime .
In 1966 Reichel was drafted into the German Armed Forces , which meant a sudden break in his career with the Rattles. The Rattles had just landed some very successful hits (for example Come on and sing or Stoppin 'in Las Vegas ). In the press, Reichel's call-up was maliciously commented on because his long hair, which was still frowned upon in wide circles at the time, was trimmed to the length of a match. During his time as a soldier he was replaced by Frank Dostal in the Rattles . In 1966 Reichel had advertised the Bundeswehr with a kind of music video, uniform and a guitar in hand ( wear it like a man ), but he had wanted to evade his call-up in court. Dostal, with his sonorous bass-baritone voice, was an accepted successor to Reichel and also recorded some hits with the band that also appeared in the charts (including It Is Love and Cauliflower ). With that, Reichel's return to the band was very questionable.
After his discharge from military service, Reichel leased the legendary Hamburg Star Club together with Frank Dostal and other musicians , but had to file for bankruptcy at the end of 1969. He had more success with the band project Wonderland , produced by James Last , which landed the hit Moscow in 1968 , which featured striking psychedelic sound effects. Reichel then turned to various experimental and very psychedelic projects as a producer and solo artist. It began with the solo project AR & Machines , whose first album The Green Journey was compared by critics to Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream because of its meditative, trance and industrial anticipatory character . His productions at the time also included the acidfolk album Jesus Makes You High by Michael Anton & Amok and the albums by the group Ougenweide .
In 1975 he presented Dat Shanty Alb'm for the first time, an album with sea shanties (often referred to as Shantys ). Not only was the change in style away from experimental recordings to folk sounds astonishing, but also the fact that Reichel has sang predominantly in German since then. In 1976 he started with the demand: “Folk music has to live, and it can only do that if you take it into the sound of the time.” From then on, seafaring remained a frequent theme in his songs. Classical German and above all North German poetry was set to music by Reichel ( Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland , Der Zauberlehrling , Belsazar , Erlkönig , John Maynard , Nis Randers , Pidder Lüng , Trutz, blanke Hans ), especially on the LP Regenballade (1978 ), which was even recommended for use in German lessons in educational specialist literature.
Numerous other LP releases followed, almost annually around 1980. Reichel also worked with poets such as Jörg Fauser and Kiev Stingl and had hits in the German charts at irregular intervals since the late 1970s. In 1981 Blues In Blond appeared with the hit Der Spieler and he went on a tour of Germany . 1986 Achim Reichel played in the movie Va Banque of Diethard Küster with u. a. Winfried Glatzeder , Willy DeVille , Rolf Zacher and Joschka Fischer . In the late autumn of 1986, Reichel toured Southeast Asia with his band for four weeks as a musical ambassador at the invitation of the Goethe Institute . Towards the end of the 1980s, Reichel's repertoire became rockier again, from 1988 there were reunion concerts with the Rattles, who had split up in 1977.
In 1991 Reichel also produced his studio LP Melancholie & Sturmflut with the summer hit Aloha Heja He , which the Spiegel classified as a "Mitgröl-Shanty", for which he nevertheless received a gold record . The song Amazonen from 1993 was not played by many radio stations because it contained the word "men's ass" and was interpreted as "misogynist-discriminatory". On the contrary, Reichel wanted it to be understood as a song about strong women and meant the text sarcastically. He celebrated his 50th birthday with a concert at Große Freiheit 36 , the recording of which was published as a live album. At the request of Greenpeace , Reichel recorded a song in 1996 about the accident in the oil tanker Exxon Valdez and the environmental disaster it caused.
In 2003 Achim Reichel celebrated his 40th stage anniversary with a two-day party in the Hamburg fish auction hall . The concert was recorded by the WDR- Rockpalast team and broadcast on television and published on CD and DVD under the title 100% Life . In 2005 Achim Reichel took on the leading role in the NDR series, 'DAS! travels' for the 3rd season with 52 episodes. With the album Volxlieder in 2006, Reichel again dedicated himself to the cultural assets of traditional German folk songs, including Sah ein Knab 'ein Röslein stand and It were two royal children , in a musically current design.
In 2005 he became involved as a “boatman” for the German Society for Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS). The annually changing “Bootschafter” makes himself available for his term of office on a voluntary basis for advertising measures of the DGzRS, which is mainly financed by donations.
Occasionally Reichel worked as an actor and voice actor. In 2009 he played an executioner in the film 12 Meters Without a Head , and in 2010 he lent the German voice to Kraken Slim in the Belgian 3D animation film Sammy's Adventure - The Search for the Secret Passage .
His tour SOLO MIT EUCH, mein Leben mein Musik-sung and told , which was celebrated by the public and the press , took Reichel through more than 60 German cities in five years. The tour began on November 21, 2009 with a concert in Hamburg and ended on October 4, 2013 with the 100th concert in Hamburg's Laeiszhalle . In 2009 the storyteller concert "Solo with you" directed by Rudi Dolezal ( DoRo ) was recorded at Kampnagel in Hamburg. DVD and CD were released in autumn 2010. Reichel was accompanied by two musicians on the tour, from 2009 by Peter David "Pete" Sage ( violin , mandolin , percussion, guitar ) and Berry Sarluis ( accordion , keyboard ). From 2012 Larry Mathews (violin, mandolin, bodhrán , guitar) took over the part of Pete Sage, who has since devoted himself entirely to the band Santiano .
