Peter David "Pete" legend

Santiano is a German band from the north of Schleswig-Holstein , which mainly sings of nautical motifs in their songs . The band mixes and combines different music genres such as folk , pop , rock and hit music ; she also reinterprets traditional folk songs , sea shanties and hits from other musicians. At Echo Pop , Santiano was named the best group in the folk music category four times .

The band name is derived from the chanson of the same name by the French singer Hugues Aufray from 1961, which in turn is based on the traditional English shanty O Santianna (All on the Plains of Mexico) - also Santiano and other spellings.

history

The idea for Santiano came from Hartmut Krech, a music producer based in Flensburg and owner of the Elephant Music label . He brought the five musicians together in 2011, who had previously been pursuing different projects. Hans-Timm Hinrichsen played blues and rock music with Jack McTiger and the New Deal from 1988 to 1994. Axel Stosberg was part of the Ohnsorg Theater ensemble . Björn Both was the front man of the band Late September Dogs from 1990 to 2003 . Andreas Fahnert was a member of the band Rockwork in the 1980s. He wrote film music, including for Werner films. Pete Sage worked as an accompanist for a long time, among others with Marius Müller-Westernhagen , Mike Oldfield and most recently with Achim Reichel .

On February 3, 2012, We Love Music , a cooperation label between Universal Music and ProSiebenSat.1 Media , released the band's first album entitled Bis ans Ende der Welt . It reached number 1 on the German album charts. In the same year the group completed a tour through several cities in German-speaking countries, where they also performed at the Wacken Open Air . In November 2012, a documentation of their tour was released as a live CD / DVD. On May 10, 2013, the album with the tides followed with the single God must be a sailor . Both the album and the single entered the charts. This was followed by the Mit den Gezeiten tour, which led through Germany, Switzerland and Austria and lasted from November 2013 until just before Christmas 2014. Since 2013, the band has also established an open-air concert series in the summer, during which two concerts are played in the Kalkbergstadion Bad Segeberg every year in May . The concert series always ends with two concerts in Ralswiek on the island of Rügen.

Furthermore, Santiano appeared as the opening act for the tour Das Sommer-Event 2013 by Helene Fischer and took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 , Our Song for Denmark on March 13, 2014 . With the titles The Fiddler on the Deck and We will never go under , the group reached the semi-finals, but lost there in the audience vote to Unheilig and the later winners of Elaiza .

Since 2012, Andreas Fahnert has suffered several hearing loss, so that he is no longer present at live performances on medical advice. His vocal parts are taken over by Axel Stosberg and Hans-Timm Hinrichsen in the live performances. The live cast also includes Dirk Schlag (guitar), Arne Wiegand (keyboard) and Marco Moeller (drums), who was represented on the Mit den Gezeiten tour by Timon Fenner.

The album Von Liebe, Tod und Freiheit was released on May 29, 2015 and again brought the band number 1 in the German album charts. A tour followed from November 2015, which lasted until September 2017. An open-air concert was recorded in the Berlin Waldbühne and published in December 2016 under the title Von Liebe, Tod und Freiheit - Live on CD and DVD.

On October 13, 2017, the group's fourth studio album was released in the eye of the storm . The songs Sail Away , Can you hear me and I'll bring you home were published beforehand .

On June 11th and 12th, 2019, the band recorded an MTV Unplugged in the Kulturwerft Gollan in Lübeck . They described the invitation as “an honor and a challenge at the same time”. The guests included Angelo Kelly , Michael Robert Rhein from In Extremo , Alexander Wesselsky from Eisbrecher , Ben Zucker , Wincent Weiss , Jennifer haben from Beyond the Black , Oonagh and Alligatoah , Andreas Fahnert came on stage for the song Die Sehnsucht ist mein Steuermann . The album was released on October 18, 2019.
