Mit den Gezeiten is the second studio album by the German band Santiano . It was released on May 10, 2013 and entered the German charts at number one .

History of origin

Santiano was created through the efforts of music producers Hardy Krech, Mark Nissen and Annett Lorenzen-Krech ( Elephant Music ) and Joe Chialos ( Universal Music ). After the success of the debut album Bis ans Ende der Welt , the band toured among others in the opening act of Helene Fischer , but also played at various festivals of the metal scene , such as the Full Metal Cruise and the Wacken Open Air 2012. According to their own statement During the recording of the album, the members of Santiano ignored the pressure that was on them after the successful debut album and tried to take a relaxed approach in the studio. They received no specifications from their label Universal Music and were largely free to work on the new songs. Due to the numerous appearances, however, there was little time for the recordings.

Music and lyrics

Musically, Santiano remains a band that primarily mixes shanties with various influences from pop and rock music . There are also influences from hits , folk music , Irish folk and subtle metal influences.

Hardy Krech from Santiano thinks Mit den Gezeiten for "rockier, harder, also a little bad", because more electric guitars are used. Through the experience at the live concerts, where the powerful songs in particular were well received, the production of the new album began to be made harder and more electric guitar to be used without neglecting one's own style.

As with the predecessor, the sailor theme was retained to match the music style. The album is about the vastness of the sea, life at sea, heartache and longing.

Song info

The songs are mostly original compositions by the producer team around Hartmut Krech . The album also includes a cover version of Bob Geldof's "Great Song of Indifference" and the Irish anti-war song " Drums and Guns - Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya ". "Until all eternity (Wallhalla)" is a German cover version of the Hooters classic " All You Zombies ". “Stranded” is a duet between singer Björn Both and the North Frisian singer Synje Norland , who already accompanied Santiano on the 2012/2013 tour. A music video was shot on the Cornish coast and on the deck of the sailing ship “Clasine” for the song “God must be a sailor”, the album's opener . Marie is a cover version of the Scottish folk song " Ye Jacobites By Name ".

Swiss special edition

At the end of November 2013, a special edition of the album with four additional songs was released in Switzerland. The songs come from the Swiss songwriter Peter Reber and were re-recorded with him. In 2014 the band went on tour through Switzerland with the singer. For the special edition, Reber translated texts from older songs from Swiss German into Standard German.

criticism

Jenny Weser from Intro writes: “Sailor's thread dripping with pathos like this is Santiano's trademark. A little Irish folk, folk music, pop, always underlaid by the drivingly thunderous framework of a sea shanty.

Artur Schulz from Laut.de awarded three out of five stars and summed up:

“Rocked sailor shanties on a North German metal stage - that fits. "Mit Den Gezeiten" proves: The Santianos are not mayflies or dreary stickfish, in order to dive straight into the nautical vocabulary. "

- Artur Schulz : Laut.de

success

The album went straight to number one in the German charts . The album reached number 31 in the Austrian charts, in Switzerland it reached number 21 in May and the special edition with Peter Reber entered the Swiss charts at number 10 in December 2013.
