The Rattles are a German beat and rock band that was one of the most successful of its genre in Germany in the 1960s and early 1970s.
Band history
In December 1960 the Rattles were founded in Hamburg by Achim Reichel and Herbert Hildebrandt. On 3 February 1963, the band won a contest at the Hamburg Star-Club and was then the first German band with a commitment to this club. In the fall of the same year they recorded their first single . Then the group went on tour in England for five weeks with Bo Diddley , Little Richard and the still unknown Rolling Stones . In 1966 they stood on stage with the Beatles and played in the opening act of the Bravo Beatles blitz tour in Munich, Essen and Hamburg, with great popularity.
Rattles records appeared, which enjoyed regional success in England, and so they were occasionally celebrated in Liverpool as the "German Beatles ".
In total, the group had a dozen hits, including titles like La La La (1965), Come On and Sing (1966) and Cauliflower (1967). In 1965 they also recorded tracks with Johnny Hallyday ( Let the people talk , It's Monkeytime ), which appeared on the LP / CD Johnny Hallyday meets The Rattles .
In 1970 the Rattles had an international hit with The Witch . The song first appeared as the B-side of the 1969 single Geraldine . In June 1970 The Witch came as A-side up to number 79 in the USA and in October in Great Britain up to number 8. The Rattles line-up at this time: Kurt "Zappo" Lüngen (bass), Rainer Degner (guitar), Peet Becker (drums) and Henner Hoier (vocals), who had switched from the Rivets to the Rattles. Due to the success, the Rattles recorded a new version of The Witch in a new line-up with Edna Bejarano as the singer . This version reached number 4 in the German charts in October 1970. The piece was composed by Herbert Hildebrandt. Henner Hoier, who had sung the original, left the band a year later and founded the Les Humphries Singers with Les Humphries . By this time Achim Reichel had long since left the group. After his military service, he founded the Wonderland group in 1967 with ex-rattles Dicky Tarrach and Frank Dostal as well as Helmut Franke and Les Humphries . The "new" 1970s rattles with Edna Bejarano, Frank Mille, Borny Bornhold and Zappo Lüngen only had to do with the original formation insofar as Herbert Hildebrandt continued to be the group's composer and producer. Other singles like You Can't Have Sunshine Every Day and Devil's on the Loose (both 1971) were only minor hits in the Federal Republic of Germany.
In 1977, the Rattles disbanded after a few other line-up changes. But since 1988 they have been playing regularly at festivals and events with founding member Hildebrandt. On September 26, 2005, the Rattles celebrated their forty-five years of existence with a concert in the "Hamburger Landhaus Walter" and the DVD Beat Made in Germany , which tells the full story of the band.
In 2007 the Rattles released their first studio album in fifteen years, Say Yeah! The record contains 15 new songs and was recorded in the Rattles hometown of Hamburg. The new songs follow the old style that made the Rattles so popular many years ago.
In 2010, on the 50th anniversary of the stage, the band signed with the Hamburg music label Edel Records and released a new studio album, Rattles 50 , with 14 new titles in a new, modern sound. At the same time, newly arranged and recorded greatest hits were released .
