Self is a rock band and was the brainchild of musician Matt Mahaffey from Murfreesboro , Tennessee . There he began his musical career as a drummer. He had his first band when he was ten. After trying his hand at multiple genres including punk , reggae and pop , he started his own indie label called Spongebath. The different experiences with the individual genres flowed into the unique style of Self.
history
Self's debut album, Subliminal Plastic Motives , was released in 1995 by Mahaffey's Spongebath label. It was followed by The Half-Baked Serenade 1996 and the free Internet album Feels Like Breakin 'Shit , on a cover of of Prince -penned songs 're Let's Pretend We Married exists, the album on its 1999 can be heard in the original. The EP album Brunch was released in 1998, followed by Breakfast with Girls in 1999 in cooperation with Dreamworks Label. Selfs next album Gizmodgery was released in 2000 based on Pianosaurus (Groovy Neighborhood, 1987), the concept of the album being to play all songs with children's toy instruments. In the same year two internet albums ( Self Goes Shopping and Selfafornia ) were released. Consisting of demo songs that were created between 2001 and 2004, Self released another Internet album, Porno, Mint and Grime in 2005 . The latest album is called Hello Radio and was released in July 2006.
The future of Self is uncertain. The members sometimes work on other projects, including their own. Matt Mahaffey formed a new band called Wired All Wrong. The first album was released in September 2006. Matt and Chris James are also working on production for other artists. In January 2007 Matt announced that a new album was in the works, but currently no release date is known.
composition
While Mahaffey gets the most attention from Self, he's not the only member of the band. The current members are Chris James ( keyboard , piano , guitar , backing vocals ), Mac Burrus ( bass , keyboard, horn, backing vocals) and Jason Rawlings ( drums ). Former members were Mahaffey's brother Mike (guitar, keyboard) and Timm Nobles (bass). Because Mahaffey is practiced in almost all instruments that are used by Self, he plays most of the instruments on the albums, the other members occasionally also play on the albums or at concerts.
