Ferzan Özpetek
Ferzan Özpetek (born February 3, 1959 in Istanbul ) is an Italian film and opera director and screenwriter of Turkish origin.
Life
Özpetek came to Rome in 1978 as a correspondent for Turkish newspapers , where he studied film history, art history, costume making and directing. He first worked at the theater, then as an assistant director for TV and cinema productions for Italian directors such as Maurizio Ponzi , Ricky Tognazzi and Marco Risi .
In 1997 he made his first own feature film, Hamam - The Turkish Bath , which was shown in arthouse cinemas with great success not only in Italy, but also in France, Germany, Great Britain and the USA. In 2008 he received an invitation to compete at the 65th Venice Film Festival for the drama Un giorno perfetto . In November 2014 he was the jury chairman at the 32nd Turin Film Festival.
He also worked as a stage director: in April 2011 he directed the opera Aida , and almost a year later La Traviata . In 2019 he directed Madame Butterfly at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
Özpetek is considered to be one of the most important representatives of newer Italian cinema. He changed from Turkish to Italian citizenship. The focus of his films are regularly same-sex lovers and their fates within the framework of a larger network of relationships.
