The clueless (original title: Le fate ignoranti ) is an Italian feature film from 2001 by director Ferzan Özpetek . It is about a woman who, after the sudden death of her husband, learns that he led a double gay life for years . Alternative title is Fairies - The Clueless .

action

Antonia and Massimo are a married couple for 15 years who lead a civil life. Massimo had a fatal accident in a car accident. On it Antonia contains the personal belongings from her husband's office. Including a painting. While hanging up the painting, she discovers a personal handwritten note on the back. It is addressed to Massimo and signed "your unsuspecting fairy". From the text it becomes clear that Massimo probably had an affair for seven years. Antonia suspects a woman and wants to see her.

Antonia goes to the apartment via the sender of the original mailing. There she meets a very urban residential area . A shared apartment with gay and lesbian residents lives in the apartment. Antonia only knows the sender's last name and asks for Signorina Mariani. The residents try to send her out of the apartment, saying that Signorina Mariani is not there and only comes very rarely. Only after further Antonia asked very stubborn, outed himself Michele, to have been the friend of Massimo. Antonia cannot believe this at the beginning because she suspected a woman until the end. At the news, she slaps Michele and leaves the apartment.

Subsequently, Antonia would like to meet Michele again. After mutual hesitation, they both approach. Antonia slowly makes friends with the residents, the friends of her deceased husband. She realizes that her husband wasn't just having an affair, he was leading a completely different lifestyle. For example, Antonia learns that Massimo likes to cook. But Michele also realizes that his friend, with whom he was a couple for seven years, didn't tell him everything either. He finds out that, contrary to what he thought, Massimo's favorite poet was not Nazım Hikmet at all , but Antonias, and when he first met Massimo in a bookstore who was looking for the same book, he didn't want to buy it for himself, but rather for his wife Antonia. Both are slow to understand the different lifestyles Massimo led.

The motif of the "clueless" is also reflected in other subplot strands. Michele and his friends did not tell their roommate Ernesto that his friend died a year ago. Resident Mara, a transsexual , considers going back to a family celebration. However, their family does not know anything about the sex change, so they are afraid of the reactions there.

criticism

The lexicon of international films writes: “A mentally fuzzy, staged half-baked attempt to idealize a tolerant residential community as the resurrection of the extended family and to combine it with the self-search of a woman who has been thrown out of traditional (marriage) paths. Since the image design and the actors do not set any accents, the film thwarts its very good intentions. "

Awards

The film won nine awards and was nominated ten more times.

  • Özpetek was nominated for the Golden Bear in the category of best director.
  • 2001: Globo d'oro : Best Director for Özpetek.
