Jan Hřebejk (born June 27, 1967 in Prague , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech director and screenwriter .

He attended the Academic Gymnasium together with Petr Jarchovský . Even during his time at the FAMU film academy with the subject of dramaturgy , he was interested in directing and shot the film What you want to know about sex but are afraid of experiencing it (Co všechno chcete vědět o sexu a bojíte se to prožít) (1988) and LP 1948 (1989). In 1991 he worked as a director for Czech television. The result was the short film Do nothing unless you have an urgent reason to do so (Nedělejte nic, pokud k tomu nemáte vážný důvod). At that time, his classmate Petr Zelenka was writing the script. A year later, Jan Hřebejk directed Egon Hostovský's novel An Evening of Good Deeds (Dobročinný večírek). Based on the tales of Petr Šabach's The Years of the Jackal (Šakalí léta), he wrote his first full-length film in which the famous Czech actor Josef Abrhám also played a role. He received the Bohemian Lion for this . This was followed by other films by the author duo, the comedy Kuschelnester (Pelíšky), the Oscar- nominated film We Must Stick Together , Pupendo and Head Overhead (Horem Pádem) .

Jan Hřebejk continued to work with television and theater. In 1996 he shot the children's series Where the Stars Fall (Kde padají hvězdy) based on the script by Jarchovský. For the theater he staged Dangerous Relationships (Nebezpečné vztahy). He also makes documentaries, music videos and commercials.
