Paolo Virzì (born March 4, 1964 in Livorno ) is an Italian director , film producer and screenwriter .

Virzì first appeared as a screenwriter from the late 1980s. Since 1994 he has also been active as a director. The activity as a producer was added in the 2000s.

Training and first work in the film industry

Virzì began to write his first plays in high school in Livorno. After studying at the philosophical-historical faculty of the University of Pisa , during which he made his first amateur films, he moved to Rome and began studying at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (Experimental Center for Cinematography), the national film school where others have already attended well-known Italian directors such as Michelangelo Antonioni and Giuseppe De Santis were trained. In 1987 he finished his studies. In collaboration with his former professor Furio Scarpelli , Virzì delivered his first work as a screenwriter with the film " Time to Live, Time to Die ". In the following years he worked as a screenwriter for several films.

Success as a director

In 1994 Virzì achieved his national breakthrough with his first directorial work " La bella vita ". For his directorial work he was awarded the two most important national film awards, the Davide di Donatello and the Nastro d'Argento , in the category of best young directors. The film was well received at the Venice Film Festival .

With his directorial work " Ferie d'agosto ", Virzì was able to build on the success of his first film and won the Davide di Donatello for best film.

Numerous other films followed. All in all, Virzì's work in the areas of directing and screenwriting has been awarded a Davide di Donatello 7 times and the Nastro d'Argento 9 times .

Paolo Virzì is one of the most famous Italian filmmakers today. The majority of his works can be assigned to the genre of comedy.

The Italian newspaper Repubblica said: "Paolo Virzi is certainly the Italian filmmaker who best carries on the legacy of Italian comedy."

Private

He was first married to Paola Tiziana Cruciani. On January 17th, 2009 he married the actress Micaela Ramazzotti and they have two children.
