Marta finished her philosophy studies with “summa cum laude” and is looking for a job. Only: It looks very bad in your area. Lara, a little girl, hands her a sheet from a babysitting job in the subway. Lara is the "baby" and through her mother Sonia Marta ends up in the call center of an American company where she works herself. She also moves into a small room in Sonia's apartment.

The call center is headed by Daniela, who values ​​unusual motivational measures. So the day begins with dancing, singing and clapping. At every workplace there is a mirror so that you don't forget to smile.

Soon Marta, who was very distant from this whole circus at the beginning, becomes the best telephone seller in the whole company. But when she realizes how coldly the not so successful telephone operators are being fired, she goes to the union and promptly falls in love with Giorgio, the charming but also married union secretary. Before anything can develop between them, however, Giorgio has an affair with Sonia that won't let a man go by. Out of frustration, Marta then sleeps with Lucio 2, a colleague from the company who has been into her for a long time.

After an interview on television in which Giorgio criticized the working conditions in the company, the company's boss Claudio hit the headlines. Sonia and also Lucio 2 are released.

After a long-gone affair with Claudio, Daniela just fantasized about a life with Claudio. She is waiting for Claudio to leave his wife. From Marta, however, she learns that Claudio has been living alone for six months. She kills him one evening.

Marta's essay on Heidegger and the group dynamics among employees of a call center , which she wrote while working for a respected specialist journal, is published. In the end, she sits with Sonia and Lara in the garden of an elderly lady whom Marta met over the phone and eats chicken with baked potatoes.
