Laurent Tirard (born February 18, 1967 ) is a French screenwriter and film director .

biography

Tirard studied filmmaking from 1985 to 1989 at the New York University Film School . He then worked as a script reader for Warner Bros. , before writing for six years as a journalist for the French film magazine Studio . During this time he wrote several scripts, all of which were rejected. With his first screenplay sold, he finally made two short films, which in turn led to his first feature film debut as a director. The comedy Mensonges et trahisons et plus si affinités… was released in French cinemas in 2004 and was seen by over 740,000 viewers.

Tirard gained greater fame in 2007 when the historical film Molière was released. The fictional film about the French playwright Molière of the same name was seen by 1.4 million French cinema-goers, and Tirard and his co-writer Grégoire Vigneron received a nomination for the best original screenplay at the César 2008 French film award .

However, he had his greatest success so far when he filmed the French children's book Little Nick under the title of the same name . Over 5.5 million French viewers saw the film in cinemas in 2009. In Germany, the film opened in cinemas on August 26, 2010 and was seen by 366,251 viewers. In addition, Tirard received his second César nomination in 2010 , again with Vigneron, this time for Best Adapted Screenplay .
