Florin Șerban (born January 21, 1975 in Reșița ) is a Romanian film director and screenwriter.

biography

Florin Șerban studied philosophy, hermeneutics and cultural theory at the Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj in Transylvania from 1992 to 1998 . He then moved from 1998 to 2002 to Bucharest , at the National University for Theater and Film Arts "IL Caragiale" (UNATC), where he studied film directing. During this time he made the short film Mecano (2001), which he made together with his fellow students Cristian Nemescu and Daniel Șerbănică. The six-minute film won an award at the Romanian student film festival CineMAiubit in 2001 and a year later at the international short film festival DaKINO .

In 2003 he continued his studies at Columbia University in New York . He completed his film studies there in 2008 and then devoted himself to his feature film debut Eu când vreau să fluier, fluier (English-language festival title: If I Want To Whistle, I Whistle ). The drama, based on a play by Andreea Vălean, tells the story of the Romanian youth Silviu (played by amateur actor George Piștereanu ), who is sentenced to four years in prison for theft. A few days before his release, he learns of the return of his mother, who has found work in Italy and wants to return there with his younger brother. To prevent this, he desperately plans to escape. During the preparations, he makes the acquaintance of the young social worker and psychology student Alma (Ada Condeescu), whom he spontaneously takes hostage in order to force his escape.

In April 2008 the film project was included in the CineLink funding series of the Sarajevo Film Festival . A year later, the shooting took place in Romania, with former juvenile offenders from Craiova and Tichilești added to the acting ensemble. Fascinated by the prisoners' two to three-day escapes, Șerban had already helped prepare Ivana Mladenovic's documentary The World in Small Squares about the conditions of juvenile offenders in Romania with the help of the state authorities . Eu când vreau să fluier, fluier was co-financed with around 238,000 euros by the French Center national de la cinématographie et de l'image animée (CNC) and won the Sarajevo CineLink Prize in August 2009, whereupon post-production was supported with 80,000 euros has been. A few months later, Șerban received an invitation to compete at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival for his debut film . For the first time since 1993 , a Romanian film director competed for the Golden Bear . Șerban received the Grand Jury Prize and the Alfred Bauer Prize for Eu când vreau să fluier, fluier . In the same year his film was selected as a Romanian candidate for the 2011 Oscar abroad .

With the film Emigrant (2009), shot in New York, and the thriller El Rumano (2010), two further film projects are in preparation. In addition to working as a director and screenwriter, Șerban was also responsible as a co-producer of Antonio Mendez Esparza's award-winning short film Una y otra vez (English title: Time and Again , 2009).
