Mirjana Karanović ( Cyrillic Мирјана Карановић; born January 28, 1957 in Belgrade ) is a Yugoslav or Serbian actress , director and screenwriter.

Karanović made her debut in 1980 in the film Petrijin venac , in which she played an illiterate Serbian woman . She became internationally known in 1985 through the portrayal of her mother in Emir Kusturica's film Otac na službenom putu ( Dad is on a business trip ).

In 2003 she took on a role in the Croatian film Svjedoci and was the first Serbian actress to film in Croatia again after the war in Yugoslavia.

In 2005 she starred in the Bosnian film Esma's Secret - Grbavica , directed by Jasmila Žbanić , which won the Golden Bear in 2006 at the Berlinale . Here she portrayed a Bosniak girl who was raped by Serbs during the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In 2016 Karanović made her debut as a director and screenwriter with Dobra žena (A Good Wife) . The film, in which she also starred, centers on a wife and mother from an upscale Belgrade suburb who is confronted with a breast cancer diagnosis and a shocking video of her husband. Dobra žena won prizes at several international film festivals.

Mirjana Karanović is a signatory of the declaration published in 2017 on the common language of Croatians , Serbs , Bosniaks and Montenegrins .
