action

Luna works as a flight attendant for the state-owned Bosnian airline. Your friend Amar is an air traffic controller at Sarajevo Airport . The two are a loving couple who lead a happy life in Sarajevo as far as possible. They have been trying to father a child for a long time, which is why they seek medical help. Amar has a drinking problem. When this is noticed while at work, he is suspended for six months. On an outing with friends, Amar meets his war comrade Bahrija again. Bahrija is now a practicing Muslim, his wife Nadja wears the burqa and he refuses to shake hands with Luna as a woman, which irritates his friends. Amar and Bahrija meet again, and Bahrija explains to his friend how he found faith. After the Bosnian War , he initially found it difficult to find his way in civil life. In Islam he finally took hold. The equally unfounded Amar has Bahrija arrange for him to work in the camp of his Muslim Wahhabi community on a remote lake. Like Amar's new friends, Luna is cautious about the offer.

After a while, she visits him at the lake anyway. She is picked up by Nadja and spends a strange weekend in the Muslim camp. The separation of women from men frightens them, and Amar has already visibly changed too. She drives back to Sarajevo, disturbed. When Amar returns after a while, Luna discovers that her partner has also turned to Islam. He would like to marry her according to Islamic law and is now refusing premarital sex with her. Luna begins to doubt whether she wants to spend the rest of her life with Amar. She also now doubts the once so longing desire for children. She refuses artificial insemination at the last moment. Although both love each other, they have no choice but to go their separate ways. Luna decides for a life as a free woman and against Amar, whose transformation she cannot understand.

Reviews

“What is so abstractly and at the same time threateningly talked about in editorials and books, namely how fundamentalism is spreading in Europe, can be experienced up close, even intimately, in 'Between Us Paradise'. And the cinema viewer wishes Luna one thing above all else: good luck, with or maybe without Amar. "

- Hannoversche Allgemeine

"Sometimes 'On the Way' is very conventional, sometimes it's funny, but always stays close to his two heroes without condemning or betraying them."

- The mirror

“With 'Between Us The Paradise' comes the first weighty feature film (…) that reflects the increasing influence of fundamentalist belief on European bourgeois society. Precisely because the film refuses to give an overly clear statement, it forces viewers to form their own opinion. "

- Augsburg General
