Life is a Miracle is a 2004 film directed by Emir Kusturica . It reflects the experiences of a family in the Balkan wars of the 1990s, resist and describes the difficulties in the love affair of a Serbian Orthodox - Muslim couple in the context of this conflict. The film underlines the absurdities of the war and is thus a plea against nationalism .
action
In 1992 the Serbian engineer Luka Đurić settled with his wife, the unsuccessful opera singer Jadranka, and his son Miloš in a remote Bosnian village near Višegrad . There he is tasked with rebuilding a railway line through a scenic area, with the help of which tourists are to be attracted. Miloš, an avid soccer fan aiming for a career in a professional soccer club, is drafted into military service. After the farewell party organized for Miloš, Luka realizes that his wife is up and away with a Hungarian musician who has imagined a successful future for her.
Shortly afterwards, the Bosnian war breaks out. Despite the fact that this thwarted tourist plans, Luka unwaveringly continued to build the railway line and turned a blind eye to the war. Miloš is captured. The Serbian militia hands a young Muslim hostage (Sabaha) to Luka, who in exchange is supposed to secure the release of his son. But then Luka falls in love with the young nurse and gets into a conflict of decisions: either renounce to see his son again or get over the loss of Sabaha.
criticism
Lexicon of the international film : “The village comedy with burlesque tones is gradually turning into a bitter tragedy that, despite the trauma of the civil war, continues to celebrate life in its bizarre colorfulness. The film can only meet its claim to a limited extent because it remains too attached to a description of the state. "

background
The coastal village built for the film has been continuously expanded since the shooting and is also inhabited by Kusturica. The Internacionalni festival filma Kustendorf has been taking place there since 2008 . The shooting took place on the narrow-gauge mountain railway Šarganska osmica , which was actually rebuilt as a tourist attraction in the border area to Bosnia-Herzegovina, just like the railway line in the film plot should. The Golubići station, one of the main locations, was set up specifically as a film set and is now used as a stop for tourist trains.
