Coastal village
Küstendorf ( Serbian : Drvengrad or Mećavnik ) is a mountain village in Serbia that was established in the 2000s . The village planned by Emir Kusturica is located at an altitude of 670 m above sea level, one kilometer west of Mokra Gora in the Zlatibor Mountains in western Serbia, near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina . Küstendorf, which is located at the location of Kusturica's film Life is a Wonder , is continuously being expanded.
The village
The open-air museum-like village, which can be visited for a fee, has a cafeteria, a restaurant, Kusturica's house with a built-in swimming pool and library, an underground cinema Anderground / Bioskop Stenleja Kjubrika ( renamed Stanley Kubrick cinema after Emir Kusturica's film Underground from 1995, 2008 ), a souvenir shop and a gallery as well as several smaller residential buildings. The cottages contain hotel rooms, equipped with TV and WiFi, and can be booked by visitors. The traditional houses are mainly made of wood, hence the name Drvengrad (wooden town). Since its construction, Küstendorf has also become a popular travel destination in connection with the Šarganska osmica museum railway that starts in Mokra Gora .
The coastal village as a tourist magnet is controversial in Serbia and outside of it. In particular, the ethno-national orientation, which emphasizes the authentic Serbian, ensures both distant and enthusiastic attitudes towards the Küstendorf project .
The German-language name of the place is an invention of its founder, Emir Kusturica. The place is like an island in the middle of a mountain landscape. It is also possible that Küstendorf (pronounced: Kustendorf) alludes to the nickname of the director Kusta .
In the village center at the end of the main street is the Serbian-Orthodox wooden church built from 2003 to 2004 for the transfer of the relics of St. Sava .
International Küstendorf Film Festival
The village sees itself not only as a visitor attraction, but also strives to be an active place for artistic and cultural discussions. In January 2008, for example, Emir Kusturica organized the first International Küstendorf Film Festival here , which sees itself as an alternative competition for young talent, particularly in contrast to western and Hollywood cinema. The second Kustendorf Film Festival took place in January 2009 and again awarded prizes for newcomer films from the European and Far East.
