On the Milky Road is a film produced in 2016 that tells, in a fairytale-like surreal way, of critical periods in a man's life in a three-part story: his time as a happy milkman in the Bosnian war , dangerous adventures and a flourishing love story, and as a monk who witnessed the turbulent Reflects on the past, both his own and that of his country. Emir Kusturica is the director and lead actor (Kosta), the female lead (bride) is played by Monica Bellucci . The film started as a competitor for the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival in 2016 .
According to Emir Kusturica, “On the Milky Road” is based on “three true stories and lots of fantasy”. The basis is the short film Our Life , which Emir Kusturica directed in 2014 as part of the episode film Words with Gods .

Every day the milkman Kosta crosses the enemy lines on his donkey and risks his life to sell milk to the soldiers. His future wife, the agile village beauty Milena, awaits him at home.
Fate thwarted Kosta's plans for a peaceful and uneventful future when he fell madly in love with a mysterious Italian woman who regularly fell into sadness while watching the classic film “ The Cranes Pull ” (1957). “The bride”, as the Italian is called, has already been promised to the war hero Žaga, Milena's brother, and is being hunted by her ex-husband. The British UNPROFOR general is on a private campaign of revenge because "the bride", whom he loved and for whom he killed his own wife, eludes his courtship. Only an adventurous and dangerous escape enables Kosta and his beloved to be together. The ex-husband of the bride lets Kosta's village burn down and massacre the population. Kosta and the bride flee from his henchmen who are chasing them, but eventually the bride is killed by a land mine.
Finally, in old age, the former milkman lives withdrawn as a monk and looks back on his eventful past.

In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK for young people aged 16 and over with the release date June 28, 2017. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film contains some drastic scenes of violence, especially in the second half. According to Hartwig Tegeler from Norddeutscher Rundfunk, it is difficult to understand what Kusturica wants to tell us in “On the Milky Road”. It's about the lust for life, which even the civil war cannot completely erase. But somehow everyone doesn't seem to mind the war: love, live, die, be blown up - yes, that's life, this film tells us. What should you do? The burlesque and grotesque that is so fascinating about “On the Milky Road” leaves a strange stale aftertaste at the same time.
Andreas Kilb from Frankfurter Allgemeine writes: In his new film, Emir Kusturica tells a love story in fairy tale format. The biggest problem here is the setting that kitschifies the Yugoslav war.
