1950 in Sarajevo . Tito broke with the Stalinist Soviet Union two years ago . The political situation of the Yugoslav population is extremely unsettled and even communists like Mehmed do not know what to say and what not to say. Mehmed lives in Sarajevo with his wife and two sons. At the same time, he has an affair with the attractive Ankica, who, however, is swarmed by his brother-in-law, a party secretary. The brother-in-law gets rid of his rival through a denunciation . Mehmed is sent to a coal mine for forced labor . His wife Sena tells the sons that the father is on a business trip. Six-year-old Malik believes his mother's story. After a few months they go to visit their father, but it is only when he is exiled to Zvornik to build a hydroelectric power station that the family can live together again. Sena and her sons go into exile with Mehmed. There is Dr. Ljahaov Mehmed's best friend. Mehmed's son Malik falls in love for the first time, with Dr. Ljahaov's daughter, who is terminally ill. Shortly after the girl died, father Mehmed received the news that the exile has been lifted and the family can return to Sarajevo. In 1952 the family is back home.

The film is told almost exclusively from the perspective of the six-year-old boy Malik, who firmly believes in the story of his father on a business trip. Malik is a big football fan and the film is pervaded by radio reports from games of the Yugoslav national football team to the 1952 Olympic football tournament . Malik is also moonstruck and sleepwalking at night, which leads to numerous strange searches.

The film by Emir Kusturica won at the International Film Festival of Cannes 1985 the Palme d'Or and was also the FIPRESCI Prize awarded. In 1986 he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar in the category of best foreign language film .
