action

Fifty-year-old Ruža from Serbia runs a thriving company canteen in Zurich, and sixty-year-old Mila from Croatia is her employee.

One day the young Bosnian Ana arrives in Zurich. At a loss, she wanders through the city and doesn't yet know where to spend the night. Although she has hardly any money in her pocket herself, she freely gives begging young people and shares her last cigarettes with them. So she joins a young couple and talks about her war experiences in Bosnia. She spends the night with them and looks for a place to have breakfast the next morning. So she gets into Ruža's canteen and notices that Mila has just injured herself. Helpful, she tends the wound on the hand and willingly step in for it. Ruža likes the ability of Ana and offers her a job in the canteen. Confused, the young woman initially refuses, but changes her mind. The next day she seems natural and rushes to work. However, Ruža doesn't like the fact that she talks so much to the canteen guests, Ana just wants to be polite.

The life-hungry woman messes up the lives of the two elders. Although Ruža always seems cold and cold, Ana organizes a small birthday party for her. She gets a CD player and dances exuberantly, so that in the end Mila and Ruža also manage to forget their everyday worries for an evening and have fun. Ana spends the night with one of the young guests and Ruža also wakes up the next morning in bed with a man. She is confused about this and does not want to admit any private happiness.

Ana hasn't told anyone that she is likely terminally ill. She has leukemia and since she has no close relatives, she has no hope of a bone marrow donation. In the pharmacy she is not given any medication without a prescription, but she is afraid to go to the doctor because she knows that he would only send her to the hospital. But she would rather enjoy her short life. She doesn't want to stay in the canteen any longer and move on, but Ruža doesn't want to let her go. When Ana gets her wages from her at the end of the month, she wants to take it to the mountains. Without further ado, Ruža accompanies them and alone they talk a lot about personal matters. Ruža has been in Switzerland for almost 25 years and left her homeland when it was still called Yugoslavia . Her friend wanted to come, but he didn't, so she was left alone. The two of them throw snow at each other and Ruža can even laugh. At the end of the day, she asks Ana where she lives and notices that she is actually homeless. So that she doesn't have to spend the night somewhere, she gives her her canteen key, which Ana actually uses for the night. When Mila notices this the next morning, she is initially upset. She was always afraid of Ruža, but actually their relationship has improved a lot since Ana has been with them. She was also always in two minds whether to stay in Switzerland or go back to Croatia. In the end, she and her husband saved up a house in their old home. As it stands now, she will not go back, especially since her children now also live in Switzerland.

In the evening Ruža accompanies Ana again and both end up in a casino. Ruža doesn't actually want to play, but Ana simply bets her chips on roulette and Ruža even wins, while Ana has already gambled away all her money herself. In the end, the two women quarrel and Ruža cannot understand why Ana is so carefree and does not value her hard-earned money as much as she, who has only worked for it all these years and also endured the loneliness for it. Ana explains to her that she is also afraid, but not of losing her money, but her life. Ruža is dismayed when she learns from Ana that she has leukemia. Without further ado she takes her to a clinic and pays for the treatment because Ana is not insured. But Ana doesn't stay and hitchhikes to the next town that night.

Existence in a foreign country feels like one in the balance: Coming home or staying? (...) The outstanding actresses are viewed by a sensitive camera that always finds the right distance from them and works together harmoniously with a cut that gives every shot exactly the right length. "
