Claude Barras (born January 19, 1973 in Sierre ) is a Swiss animation filmmaker who works primarily in the stop-motion area.

Life

Barras grew up near Crans-Montana as the son of wine growers. He first completed an apprenticeship as a civil engineering draftsman and then studied illustration and computer graphics at the École Emile Cohl in Lyon ; he completed his studies with a bachelor's degree. This was followed by a degree in computer graphics at the École cantonale d'Art de Lausanne (ECAL). His short film Mélanie was also made at ECAL in 1999 . Barras then worked as a freelance illustrator in Geneva. Among other things, he was in the film Max & Co involved.

In 2005, Barras released his animated short Banquise . The story of a girl who is laughed at for being overweight was shown at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2005 . The film was nominated for a Palme d'Or for Best Short Film in Cannes . In the following films, Barras remained true to his trademark - his trick dolls always have very big heads.

In 2016, Barras' first full-length animation film My Life as a Zucchini was released . It is based on the book autobiography d'une courgette by Gilles Paris . Nine years passed between the first work on the film and its publication, with the sound recordings and the animation each taking a year. My life as a zucchini has received numerous international film awards and was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Animated Feature Film in 2017 .

Barras lives in Geneva.
