action

Maud Watts, a 24-year-old married laundress and mother of one son, came into contact with the suffragette movement through a colleague in 1912 . Alice Haughton encourages Maud to testify before a parliamentary committee of inquiry chaired by the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, David Lloyd George, is discussing the possibility of introducing women's suffrage . When the announcement of the committee's decision was disappointing for the women, their demonstration was violently broken up and Maud was arrested. Back in freedom, she promises her husband Sonny to stay away from the suffragettes in the future.

She still goes to an event where the intellectual leader of the Movement Emmeline Pankhurst gives a speech. There Maud is arrested again and delivered by the police to Sonny, who then throws her out of the family home. The police published the pictures of the suffragettes in the newspapers, and Maud was dismissed without notice by her employer. She rejects attempts by Inspector Steed to recruit her as an agent. She secretly tries several times to see her son, but is prevented from doing so by Sonny. When Sonny cannot get along with the boy alone, he gives him up for adoption against Maud's resistance.

Attempts by the suffragettes to force the newspapers no longer to ignore them lead to bomb attacks on mailboxes and on Lloyd George's new, vacant house. Maud and other suffragettes are arrested and sent to prison. To draw attention to their situation, they are protesting with hunger strikes . The authorities initially responded with force-feeding and later, when serious health problems set in some women, passed a new law, according to which prisoners on hunger strikes can first be released and arrested again after they have recovered.

When they fail to get their concerns across to the general public, the women decide to unroll a banner in front of the cameras at one of the social highlights of the year, the Epsom Derby, in the presence of King George V. Only Maud and Emily Davison reach the derby. They are denied access to the king's area. On the spur of the moment, Emily runs onto the racetrack with the banner - and is fatally injured by the king's horse. Only now does the suffragette movement get press attention, Emily becomes the movement's martyr . The film ends with historical black-and-white images of Emily Davison's funeral, followed by overlays about the chronology of the introduction of women's suffrage in Great Britain and other countries.
