Martin Pieter Zandvliet (born January 7, 1971 in Fredericia , Denmark ) is a Danish film director , screenwriter and film editor . His film Under the Sand - The Promise of Freedom was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film in 2017 .

biography

As a young adult he surfed and dreamed of opening his own surf shop, but when he got scared of surfing around 1997, he gave up that dream. He has been in a relationship with director and camerawoman Camilla Hjelm Knudsen since 1994 . Through her he got to know the film editor Ida Breining and now wanted to become an editor himself. He studied with Anders August at Den Europæiske Filmhøjskole in Ebeltoft . He initially worked as an editor until he and Camilla Hjelm Knudsen made the documentary Angels of Brooklyn about the everyday lives of three young Puerto Rican women. After completing his studies, he trained as a director with the help of the Super 16 association . Together with Lars Kjeldgaard he wrote the experimental short film Jeg som Regel . Zandvliet made his feature film debut in 2009 with applause , which received very good reviews. At this point he had not yet completed his training as a director. His films Dirch and Under sandet received a lot of praise . Zandvliet's daughter Zoe plays in the latter and his partner was a camerawoman.

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

Honourings and prices

Angels of Brooklyn won the 2003 Robert in the Bedste Lange Documentary Film category (Best Long Documentary Film). In 2011 he was awarded the Erik Ballings travel grant , which includes prize money of 50,000 crowns. His film Under the Sand - The Promise of Freedom was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film in 2017 .
